Dominator Carb - 08/24/09 01:48 PM

I have a Dominator 1050 on our 528, running zeeker heads and Indy intake. We run no air cleaner.
We have dropped jets to 84 in the front and 87 in the rear and the plugs are still black. We can not see any leaking in the carb and the needles and seats are not leaking either, is there some where it could be leaking and us not be able to see it?
When the motor starts in alway give a puff of black smoke but it does not start hard. any suggestions

Are the accelarator pumpsset right.I run a Dominator on my 440 on the street and plugs are never black. That and check the float level.Mine has no PF.I believe I have like 72 jets all around on mine.Rocky

The power valave are not in it, I will check the number on it.
I use to run the same carb on my 451 with indy heads and intake, plugs were richer on the four corner cylinders but the centers were fine. I ran it with 91 in the front and 93 in the back., this is a larger cubic inch engine and better heads and intake.

I think you will find it's the intake not the carb

So do I just keep jetting down until the plugs look the correct color?

Re: Dominator Carb - 08/24/09 07:56 PM

I run a 1050 on a 605" , 98 squared with no PVs , is this a 3 circuit jobbie? ,if so it won't clean up with a jet change , had to modify the 3 circuit as it was PIG rich through the rpm range.

I would say the intermediate circuit needs some attention or change the metering blocks out.

Are the gaskets ok on the PV plugs?, pump diaphrams good?

If you are not running an air cleaner, put a notched hose from the front vent to the rear vent. At speed, air pressure directly into the front vent will pressurize the bowl and push a lot of extra fuel into the engine. Guess how I know?

Is this a street car... the black on fire up could
be fuel that boiled over and was laying in the intake
and in the cylinders that the intake valve is open.
You need to figure out if its fat at idle, mid range
or high rpm... just changing the jets wont help your
idle at all

The number on the carb is 8896, it is not an HP or third circuit carb.
The motor idles fine, no load up, it just will puff black smoke when started. The car is a race car, never street driven. In fact the car does not run bad at all, the plugs are black that is the only issue.car has 1.24 60' and runs low 5.70's at 120mph.
I believe the issue is no hose between the vents, we were going to put one on and have forgotten about it, I believe that is our issue because I alway ran my 451 with an aircleaner.
