Will my 8-3/4 hold up?

Will my 8-3/4 hold up? - 08/22/09 05:22 PM

will my stock 8-3/4" rear hold up to slicks behind my new motor? It will be a mild street 451 that should be in the 550 horse range once tuned properly. It's a footbrake / 727 car. The rear end has recently been rebuilt with all new bearings and a fresh sure-grip unit. But its an older gearset that makes noise and has stock axles, and it will be pushing a full weight 67 B-body.

sure it will if you set the pinion angle like sixpackgut tells you to. there are plenty running real fast with 83/4s. if it fails sixpackgut will warranty it for you at no extra charge

LOL..... However will it hold up? maybe! But for how long.... Ill never run an 8 3/4 again..... Sell the 8 3/4 to offset some of the Dana 60 costs

Here is the setup im doing now.... I like the sense of comfort back there

I feel uniquely qualified to answer this one...

3875# '67 Charger running 4.10's and slicks

I ran my 446" at just under 500hp for quite some time, and the stock axles were twisting up. A set of Dutchmans solved that until I went to a 560HP 496" motor, then the Dutchmans twisted and I upgraded to 35 spline Dutchmans. This has worked OK, but now that I'm hitting it with nitrous, I'm just waiting for it to explode. The weak link is now the caps. The cost of the caps and machine work make it cost ineffective to proceed with this rear any more.

I bought a Dana 60 housing for $125, housing ends and perches for $100, a spool for $180, used gears for $75, bearing kit for $125, $350 for new axles and bearings, and $150 in labor to shorten the housing. Total: $1005.

Compare that to he necessary work on an 8 3/4. Mark Williams cap is $100 and $250 to machine and install it, and it will only buy you a little bit of durability. 35 spline axles are $350, spool to fit the bigger axles is $180. Total: $880

$125 is all you'll save and not have NEAR the durability. I got here incrementally, but I can sell off my parts to recoup some cost. Heck, I'll sell you my whole complete running 35 spline 4.10/spool rear out of my Charger and save you some effort, but you will not want to go any faster than 11.00. I've had it to 10.75, but I really don't trust it down there, thus the Dana.

There are certain things I would do to the 8 3/4 to
help it live.... bearing caps and a back brace. The
stock axles arent any worse than the other stock
axles... they will twist(just like any stock axle)
My 8 3/4 has been living just fine but now I have
the alum center in it and my car is light.... to
me weight is what kills the 8 3/4..... my best 60'
is 1.19 with a normal 1.21. I was running a complete
stock 8 3/4 for years with a back brace and good axles
(had over 600 passes and it finally broke the stock caps

by the time you do all of that you could have bought a dana (ford truck rear) or a real race rear end

WeDgiE, My dart weighs 3150 w/me ready to race. I still run stock caps but have a back brace and fully boxed perches and 30 spline Dutchman axles.

break it.... I would get something else but its been
4 years now on this one, 6 years on my old stock one

That should work..........I`m done racing for quite a while since I met my 9-sec goal and actually enjoy driving it more than racing it + it`s WAY cheaper.

Re: Will my 8-3/4 hold up? - 08/23/09 03:47 PM

How often do you plan to race it ?? I can tell you my son and I both have 8-3/4 rears in our cars. His Dart has been on the road since 1997 and it has been raced a few times a year since 2001. My 63 has been raced about 6 times since I put it on the road in 2006. Both rears are all stock but I have a Locker in mine. We had the axles out last year and both his and mine are not twisted. I figured we would run it until the axles twist or something breaks but they are holding up fine in our mid 11 cars we race about 2 or 3 times a year. Thats why I ask how much you will race it as if only a couple times a year I would go with it and see how it holds up. Ron

Quick, I havn`t ran true slicks on the car w/this roller e-head combo........I`m scared the rears gonna scatter....
