DRAG PAK 003 PICS WITH TIMESLIPS!!!!!!! - 08/20/09 04:53 AM

Some preliminary pics of Mel and Randy Warford's "Pak Attack" Challenger serial number 003. Going to the dyno friday, and have INDY rented for some test hits. Should be interesting! Mike

Hey,
I took some photos of your car from when it was being built up in Detroit when I went with Larry to pick up his car. Let me know if you want any copies of them. The group was working on #003 and #004 when we went...

The white one has run 10.20's already. Maybe a high teen if I remember correctly.

Seeing it built like that makes everything perfectly proportionate. Nicely done.. Now get us some #'s so we can even more..

Re: DRAG PAK 003 PICS - 08/21/09 12:00 AM

FWIW the sound deadening in those cars weighs like 400-500 lbs. These DPK cars shed 1000 lbs and still retain most of the interior.

Re: DRAG PAK 003 PICS - 08/21/09 03:07 AM

The fastback cuda in the shop is Don Bales' silver bullet. Ton of pics on hemishootout .net or my website. Going to the dyno in the morning. Scaled the car today, and got everything squared away. I'll post some pics after the test. Mike

Re: DRAG PAK 003 PICS - 08/22/09 01:13 PM

Sooo, showed up at the chassis dyno yesterday at 7 am, done at nine with some good numbers in hand, not one problem which was nice. Had IRP rented for the day so we head over there at 10, get everything unloaded, get Randy acclimated to the car.... he just saw it for the first time at 7. Start out with the high chip low, and the shift light at 6800 just to get a check out run. First pass 10.34 1.38 60foot........on the high chip for 5 hun at the 1-2 and for 2.5 tenths at the big end !!! Next pass, nails the shift points, raised the high chip a hun, just sneaking up on it, 1.34 60 foot
6.38 in the eighth, 10.15 at only 121!!!!!!!!! On the high chip for a tenth and a half. That's 1.15 under on the second pass at 2980 feet DA on the chip forever. This thing is a rocketship. Period. Third pass 1.321 60 foot!!!!!!! Fourth pass the tuner picks up nine on the backhalf from the 10.15 run and it's still on the chip at the big end. Owners ended up calling it good as we had some great data already. Great day, never touched a knob, way low on tire pressure as we were "sneaking up on it" . This car will go mid to high 1.20 60 foot and 9.90 something easy. Needless to say it was a smashing success. Off to get it and the other superstockers ready for indy. See you there. Mike

Re: DRAG PAK 003 PICS - 08/22/09 01:39 PM

Absolutely freaking awesome. Great paint job, and it's already hauling the mail! Thanks for helping to make the whole program a success. Racing the car is the most important part.

Tech related: during the initial buildup a rather large steel crosscar beam near the rear footwell is cut out, and all the side impact beams are also cut out for weight savings. Though the sound deadener is pretty substantial, the car loses a whole bunch of metal also.

That car looks sweet and is bad azz! Wondering why the MPH is so slow...not that it matters much i guess..lol
Posted By: mr2performance

Re: DRAG PAK 003 PICS - 08/23/09 02:35 AM

The mph is low because the we haven't raised the high chip up yet. It hit the limiter on the 10.15 100 feet before the finish line!

Re: DRAG PAK 003 PICS - 08/23/09 02:37 AM

I hope so. I was on the losing end of one of those new Mustangs a few weeks ago. 9.80's @ 137-139! Not easy to judge at the finish line.

It was in IHRA AA/FI (stick) Class Break is 7.50 to 7.99. Class Index is 10.85 1/4 mile and 7.00 1/8 mile. So I'm not sure if that translates to NHRA AA/S or A/S since NHRA combined FI with the regular classes. I guess AA/S?

What rear is being used in the new Stock Challengers? I saw a photo of one of the prototypes with a new Moser fabricated 8 3/4" housing and an aluminum center section.
Posted By: mr2performance

Re: DRAG PAK 003 PICS - 08/23/09 03:18 PM

Dana for rear, or 8.75. I think we'll be fine at Indy.

Mike, looks great. Love the paint scheme. Any engine shots ? Top secret ? How many hours, ballpark, are needed for a professional shop to get the car from delivey shape, to race shape ? Thanks for the pics.
Posted By: mr2performance

Re: DRAG PAK 003 PICS - 08/23/09 05:05 PM

Probably 300 hrs total, if you want it right. No secrets with the engine, just don't have any pics for some reason. I do have a bad video of it on the chassis dyno, though. No plugwires on this one either Mike

Pretty cool seeing the Drag Pak's over the weekend. 10.01 ET is flying.
A little off topic, but when Dodge first announced the Drag Pak Challengers, weren't they calling them Super Stockers?
Posted By: Mancini Racing

Re: DRAG PAK 003 PICS - 09/08/09 06:46 PM

No, they were always called "Drag Paks".

Mopar would reference the success of the 64, 65 & 68 S/S cars in all the Challenger Drag Pak marketing/PR materials.

I think the wheelbase is rather long for SS. I think it's around 116". They needed to move the rear wheels forward a couple more inches. It's about the same WB as a 1964/5 Race Hemi, but they had about five feet of rear overhang.

I believe they fall into these classes at the current (original) HP factors:

6.1 - AA/SA, A/SA, B/SA and corresponding stick classes.
5.7 - D/SA, E,SA, F/SA " " " "
5.9 - G/SA, H/SA, I/SA " " " "

Re: DRAG PAK 003 PICS - 09/11/09 04:29 PM

That's not Warford's engine. Also, who cares about the wheelbase if it hooks up? I could make his stocker stand on the bumper if I wanted to. As a superstocker they would be perfect. Mike

That is easy to spot, Warford didn`t need the overpriced mopar billet fuel rails, the trick of the week waterpump drive and such to go alot quicker .

A friend of mine was thinking of selling his #8 car, .I wanted the sell my GTX to be able to build it, but decided I'd rather have a street car , with the kids an all. It's number 8. Been locked up in his trailer since he picked it up . I know he wanted to make some coin on it, just not sure how much..I'd imagine it would take 30 k to get one able to race.
