Sealing carb to my scoop.

Sealing carb to my scoop. - 08/12/09 06:25 AM

I decided to try and seal my carb to the scoop next time I go racing. I have an 8" hole in the hood under the scoop right at the carb. I bought this nice kit that Moroso makes that you adjust to size and then rivet it together and add the foam. It turned out nice. Just curious if any racers have done this with the factory style Max Wedge scoop ?? Since it is not very tall I wonder how much air it will actually get and about how much some of you jetted up ?? Here is a pic of it on the car. Thanks , Ron

Some folks will tell you that factory scoops arent high enough. I plumbed my scoops to the carb and went 2 tenths faster (cant remember mph gained). Race it and let the car tell you.

THIS can be all-over-the-map. I have seen and heard of many ET and speed improvements but also some cases where it can actually hurt the car.

DEPENDS on if the scoop is in the "good-air" or not. If it is in "bad-air" .. it can actually siphon the fuel-air mixture OUT of the carb .. if the scoop is in a negative-pressure area.

Jetting will depend on your car but I would think
2 sizes up(pri/sec) jet for MPH

Several eons ago I gained .02 and 2 mph with a sealed 6-bbl scoop vs. no seal. Same day, stepping up the jets 2 sizes. The .02/2/2 package!

Thanks for the replies. I plan to take larger jets when I try it as I plan to race as is first without it and then try it and go from there. Thanks , Ron

Ron,
i sealed my carb to the six pac hood and picked up nearly a 1/10 plus @.5-1mph.
funnily enough over the last 2 months after taking a little weight out and improving suspension i decided to play with the jetting.
up 1 jet front down 1 jet rear.
went from 11.52 to 11.41 and picked up just over 1/2 mph(118.56)
i went this way jetting as i had a light stumble@light throttle on the street and i knew it picked up in the cool air.car had been jetted to 12.2/4AFR on the dyno
will be racing the Nostalgia Nationals here in Australia this weekend.650mile drive each way - none of this girly towing stuff.
Hoping to run real fine
Tex
