Any suggestions headed to the track for the first time? - 08/12/09 02:53 AM

Taking the 70 RR with the new 505 stealth headed 250/255 dur @ 50,576 in 593 ex.Cam 727 with 4200 stall 355 gears and 295 50 15 street tires. Can't afford slicks so going to try to do something on street tires any suggestions?!

Best advice I can give you:

1) Have fun
2) Don't be afraid to ask people for questions and/or advice
3) Watch others and pay attention
4) Have fun (worth repeating)

First thing is go watch a few rounds. Watch the cars, the burn outs, the tree. The closer you can get (while still being safe like behind the wall) the better. Watch how far each car has to roll up to light the prestage and stage bulbs.

Now, go to the other end of the track and check out the turn off and return road as well as where the timing shack is. Make sure to observe anything you can use as a landmark so you know when you are nearing the end and have to get ready to turn.

Let the starter or the guy at the head of staging know it's your first time. He may let you make a single run if it makes you more comfortable.

I wouldn't worry to much about a burn out. Street tires don't get that stickky and usually just carry water onto the track. I'ld recomend driving around the water. Maybe back up just to the edge and give them a quick spin to clean off any rocks or anything but nothing more.

If you do go down with another car, remember to try and curtisy stage. Each car lights the pre stage before either lights the stage. Sometimes double bulbing happens though.

Know where the other car is on the track. Especially when it comes time to trun off. I always tell my 11 yr old that the car farthest from the turn off has the right of way and you slow down to get behind them. That way no one has a chance of being hit from the rear. When I'm racing, usually either me or the other guy make it painfull clear if we are yeilding the turn.

And drive slow through the pits. Many people walking around as well as kids that can come out of nowhere sometimes. And not becuase they are messing around either. Don't expect anyone to be able to hear you comeing.


And above all else, if you don't have the luxury of traveling with a motorhome, try and pit close to a bathroom.

Grand Am Radial GT, just regular old street tires. Seems to hook ok on the street.

Been to the drag races with other people in their cars and watched how it's done. Everybody has told me to drive around the water box. Didn't know if it would be just a waste of time being on street tires they have a test and tune the Friday night before the races so I guess I will keep everyone informed. It's a brand new hot rod...LOL! Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

Drive around the water for the first couple of runs and then, maybe, try a water burn out if you have time. Look at the 60 ft. times and the 330 ft. times to decide if your tires need a water burn out or not Good luck and have fun Warning to first time drag racers, this sport can become addictive and drain your wallet as well as other things in your life

Thats alot of engine for the street tires, your gonna
have to just roll into the throttle to get it to hook
at all... play with it..... have FUN

Just watching the cars at the starting line will help alot so you know what to do. Best launch I found on street tires was to power brake the car some and then just release the brake and roll off the starting line gradually putting the gas pedal to the floor. The trick is to give it the gas a quick as it will take it without breaking the tires loose. Once the tires spin you lost a good run. Good luck and like was said ........have fun ! Ron

leave off the last yellow... have fun,

the next advice i'm giving isnt to "jinx" you, but you'd be surprised how many "new" racers dont know this...

if you have something go wrong with your car, GET TO THE SIDE OF THE TRACK as quickly and safely as you can... if you know youre leaking stuff, get to the side and STOP... its easier to clean up a puddle then a 1000 foot stream...

ask around if you have questions, everyone there was in your shoes at one time, and you'd be surprised how many racers will give you time to help you understand or help you to improve with advice...

At KCIR, I am not sure you can drive around the water box very easily. I suggest driving on through it. The guy in the lanes will stop you in the box. After he stops you, just roll forward a few feet, wait 'til they tell you to burnout, and do a tire dry session in second gear (auto?). Footbrake about 1500 RPM, leave on last bulb, ease into the throttle, let 'er rip.
Regardless, you will have a blast, and be addicted. BTW, do we know each other? You're just down the road from Columbia. If I weren't going to Gateway this weekend, I'd be glad to help you!

Definately going to be interesting........that`s a torquey combo to hook on a street tire but at least you can play a bit and know that whatever you run you will be WAY quicker w/some sticky tires and seat time. GOOD LUCK.......

expect to go sideways in first...that car should mph pretty good maybe around 115..so dont forget your helmut! Have a good one...you will have a smile on your face for two days!

The combo in my 70 Charger RT is very similar to yours so I will be really interested in how it runs. I am sure you will have alot of fun.!

I will be taking mine out to the local drags hopefully in about 2 weeks after I get a few bugs worked out.
