help with cam selection - 08/05/09 03:04 AM
This is what I got to work with. The car is a local cruiser, no interstate, and 1/8th mile runs as street car.
I built a 499 from a 72 400 block. 0.010 in the hole pistons with -4 cc pistons and valve reliefs (flat tops)for up to 700 lift. So they claim.
I have 906 heads shaved 0.030 214/181 valves, some port work done to the heads and port matched. 1.5 adjustable rockers, and could go solid or hydraulic cam.
Standard disc brakes in my car, 4 speed and a 410 dana 60. Leaf spring car. basicly a stock 440 6pk car.
I have 2 inch hookers to install with 3.5 inch collectors or the whole stock 440-6 exhaust is still on there. I have 1970 stock 440-6 carbs on the 440 right now, and was just thinking about buying a 383 6pk intake. I don't want to be in first place as you can tell with the build, but would like a power building cam from around 2200 to 6200
This being a 499 and a light bob weight engine, I figure I can make some kind of good tq for a local cruiser and track fun car. I would like to launch around 1800 or so , so I can stick and go.
Can anyone help me with a cam choice? We have 110 race gas at the pump, my compression will be up there a bit useing a 0.020 steel shim and shaved heads.
I have no problems setting valves or degreeing a cam or playing with carb tuning. I think this engine can make 475/500 hp with a little effort, and a good amount of tq. Im just not sure about a cam. But I am going to use the parts mentioned.
Intake choice wise, I have an M1 tunnel ram with 2 660 holleys, or the 6pk I might buy, and of course I could buy a single 4 intake, but would rather just use what I have for cost wise.
I have moser 35 spline axles in the dana , a snubber, and a good moly drive shaft. I dont have any clutch issues, so im open for suggestions
Anyone have a recomendation? I dont figure any lift over around .550/.560 will do me any good since the heads are not high flowing.
Im kinda looking for a mid 8 sec 1/8 mile but dont know what to expect, I'm open to everyones suggestions. Since I have a 440-6 in my car now, I figure on useing the air breather and what not. And my hood has cuda 440-6 on it, so I'd like to keep the 6pk stuff. I use a comp xe275hl cam now and the carbs work great with this cam, but it might not work good with a 499. Im not sure, I think a bigger cam would make more power, but have vacuum outboard carbs to deal with
