help with cam selection - 08/05/09 03:04 AM

This is what I got to work with. The car is a local cruiser, no interstate, and 1/8th mile runs as street car.

I built a 499 from a 72 400 block. 0.010 in the hole pistons with -4 cc pistons and valve reliefs (flat tops)for up to 700 lift. So they claim.

I have 906 heads shaved 0.030 214/181 valves, some port work done to the heads and port matched. 1.5 adjustable rockers, and could go solid or hydraulic cam.

Standard disc brakes in my car, 4 speed and a 410 dana 60. Leaf spring car. basicly a stock 440 6pk car.

I have 2 inch hookers to install with 3.5 inch collectors or the whole stock 440-6 exhaust is still on there. I have 1970 stock 440-6 carbs on the 440 right now, and was just thinking about buying a 383 6pk intake. I don't want to be in first place as you can tell with the build, but would like a power building cam from around 2200 to 6200

This being a 499 and a light bob weight engine, I figure I can make some kind of good tq for a local cruiser and track fun car. I would like to launch around 1800 or so , so I can stick and go.

Can anyone help me with a cam choice? We have 110 race gas at the pump, my compression will be up there a bit useing a 0.020 steel shim and shaved heads.

I have no problems setting valves or degreeing a cam or playing with carb tuning. I think this engine can make 475/500 hp with a little effort, and a good amount of tq. Im just not sure about a cam. But I am going to use the parts mentioned.

Intake choice wise, I have an M1 tunnel ram with 2 660 holleys, or the 6pk I might buy, and of course I could buy a single 4 intake, but would rather just use what I have for cost wise.

I have moser 35 spline axles in the dana , a snubber, and a good moly drive shaft. I dont have any clutch issues, so im open for suggestions

Anyone have a recomendation? I dont figure any lift over around .550/.560 will do me any good since the heads are not high flowing.

Im kinda looking for a mid 8 sec 1/8 mile but dont know what to expect, I'm open to everyones suggestions. Since I have a 440-6 in my car now, I figure on useing the air breather and what not. And my hood has cuda 440-6 on it, so I'd like to keep the 6pk stuff. I use a comp xe275hl cam now and the carbs work great with this cam, but it might not work good with a 499. Im not sure, I think a bigger cam would make more power, but have vacuum outboard carbs to deal with

You have to listen to trivial stuff to recommend a cam........and be any good at it.

He's very personable. Tell him Vic sent you.

I will leave the cam recommendation to those more knowledgeable.
I will say you are severly underestimating your 1/8 mile times with this engine. You likely won't need 4.10's either. It will spin effortlessly with no stall.

Racer Brown st-21. .520 lift and 254 at .050 I have used this in street cars alot. It will idle at 900rpm all day long and make excellent power. I had a street motor KB hyper piston 360 sitting and the need came up for an engine in the racecar. I put it in the Demon and went 10.60s. Had the st-21 cam in it. Also had that cam in a low comp [8to1] 318 in the Demon and it ran 11.70s. Racer Brown phone #410-866-7660

Where can you find their lobe specs?

I was looking for them the other day.

STX-22 for SB

The car being basicly stock for the most part I dont feel it will 60 ft all that well. I figure a mid 8 would possibly be like a high 11 or low 12 in the 1/4. With no frame ties, no big tire combo or heavy launch, I'm just not expecting alot from all this. This car has never been to a track as of right now. But I do feel that a 27.5 inch diameter tire with a 4 spd and 410's I might could get all of 3rd and some of 4th in a 660 track. I have a race car, I'm just playing with parts I aquired more for curiosity more than performance.

I wouldnt think the car had 7's in it with a stock drive train. I do have a set of 354's I could throw in the rear, but the way my leaf springs are working with the car now, it seems the front end stays up and the rear stays planted fairly good.

I do intend on putting a drive shaft loop on, but no serious tires, frame tieing, long studs and and all that goes with it. I even plan on leaving the front sway bar hooked up. I have actually never tried a bottom end tq car before and just doing little things to it to see the limits. I plan on driving the car to the track, make some fun runs and driving back home.

STX-22 is what I have in the 418 sbm in the Demon now. 276 at .050 and .590 lift with 1.5 RAR. I have 1.6 RAR and still have only .570 lift at the valve. Still good for a 9.68 at 135+ with ported junkyard heads, 587 castings. The STX_22 cam I had in there first was ground in 1970. Bought it off eBay for $50 with free shipping. It lasted a year and broke in front of the last lobe. So i had Jim grind me another one just like it. Are these new fancy cams any better? I don't think so.

What is the lobe separation on it? Single pattern?

Thanks

106 sep. Int and exh same. I usually advance it at least 4 deg. Sep and C/L are set to your combo. just like Jack In The Box, he don't make it until you order it.

Take one look at a Racer Brown cam and you'll know what makes them work better than those modern wimpy cams.

I'm going to recomend getting in touch with board member Jeff Patterson. He deals Engle cams, has a wealth of experience going fast, and is willing to help you through a choice.

While I'm sure its a decent choice, the specs given here on the RB ST-21 seems like it gives away some lift ramp to some newer grinds. The Cam Jeff got me for my 451 gives quite a bit more lift with slightly less duration (???).

Good luck with whatever you end up with, sounds like a great build. I also think your under estimating what that combo will do.
