Dana 60 pinion yoke tightness - 08/01/09 05:57 PM
i just switched out my small pinion yoke for a 1350 MW pinion yoke, my question is i know there is no crush sleeve but can you over tighten one or untighten it. how close is the nut to being in the same position it came out crucial?
i dont need any problems with this simple install.

New nut, locktite and hammer down.

Dana 60 torque spec on the pinion nut is 250 to 270 ft. lbs, they have never had a cruch sleeve or crush collar, shims only on all four corners
I use to use a 10 ft. cheater bar on a 3/4 drive breaker bar and jump up and down on it to tighten the pinion nut on the Dana 60 rear end in my old hemi drag car, never had one come loose or fail

Vintage Dana 60 rears use shims but late model versions come with crush sleeves.

Your vintage Dana 60 rear uses shims, not a crush sleeve.
Simply replace the pinion seal, then tighten the nut (tight-280 lbs).

Just went through this a couple months ago; at 125 ft/lbs, my Dana had a clunking sound after 1 pass, like the ring & pinion were eating each other. Tightening the nut to 250 took care of the noise, but even with a nice wear pattern (pulled the cover & checked it), it seems to have made the car harder to push. Spool, 5.38, housing/tubes are straight.
I might experiment with backing it off to 200 ft/lbs.

Well, not trying it WOULD be one less flirtation with disaster...but I've heard "anything over 200 is OK".
