Low gear set in a 904

Low gear set in a 904 - 07/21/09 04:09 PM

I am going to freshen my 904 and I am thinking about putting a low gear set in it. Have any of you done this? Did it lower your 60' time? Was it worth it?

Currently my Duster has a fairly mild 360 and the 60' is 1.60. I am hoping to get it a bit lower.

In your case it should help your 60' times, and is an easy swap. There has been many threads on this - might I suggest using the search for earlier posts?

Something to consider is,is that no. on the et slip worth the expense in a low performance package? There are other was to lower your 60's wothout that gear set. What is your current combo? Those gear set are not cheep.

You don't have buy a after market low gear set there are plenty of stock low gear sets out there just have to find them. I would do it in a heart beat. Worked great in my car all the way down into the low 10s. Cheap way to get a lower powered or heavy car moving without putting more gear in it.

I bought a 2.74 sungear and planetaries from Neal Chance Transmissions for my 904 here in Wichita for around $60.00 a few years back.

It was a street car that I took to the strip on occasion and I never noticed much of a difference.

It wasn't worth the hassle IMO., but might be in your application.

I did notice a differance in my car with them, I just had a 318 and 2.76 gears.

They are not really expensive for a decent used set. I would not pull the trans apart to add them but I would sure as the world spend a few bucks to put em in if I had the trans apart already.

Not only are the lower ratios to help get the car moveing they are much stronger than the normal ones.

I used to have a few sets, I don't remember if I sold them all or not, I will look tonight. PM me if your interested in one.

The 360 makes about 400 HP. It has an 8" converter that flashes at 4500. Rear end has 4.56 with a spool. Cal Trac bars, monoleafs and Rancho's. Tires are 29.5X9. I have 5 1/2" of front end travel. I have a set of 4.86 gears that I can put in the rear end.

I am going to freshen the tranny because it has plenty of passes on it and I don't want to take a chance on breaking it.

On a related note does anyone make a 2.28 first gear for the 904? I am pretty sure that Pro Trans does but I was thinking that A&A might too but did not see it on their website?

Every A&A Catalog for the last couple of years says

"Straight-cut 904 Gear Sets" Call for Info

I'm going to take a WAG and say, Rick probably didn't see the need
to tool up for these, since Pro-Trans already makes them.

I'm sure it's an expensive undertaking and probably just buys them from Dave Smith.

Again, just a guess.

Raul,
Stay with the 4.56's, put in the low-gearset, you and the Duster will be pleased...I guarantee it.

In my Valiant, I have 4.30's and a 30 tall tire, and I let the low-gearset do the work.

"Not only are the lower ratios to help get the car moveing they are much stronger than the normal ones" I've never heard this, but that they were the weaker of the choices. What makes them stronger?I'd run the low gearset in low hp street/strip cars as they often are slightly quicker in the right combo.

MoparBilly I'll go with your suggestion. I'll have Brian Downing put the low gear set in when he freshens it.

Re: Low gear set in a 904 - 07/23/09 11:03 AM

ive run low gear in my 904s and in my 727s currently not in my new motor combo but putting one back in.
Also that changes 2nd gear if i read the gear ratios from stock to the low gear set.
my 4.30s become 4.5s then .
last year best 60ft 1.35 to 1.37
better motor now 1.37 to 1.40 .
believe i will get 1.32 to 1.37
hopefully by next month

Some of the standard gearsets have aluminum carriers and 3 or 4 pinions. The low gearsets I have seen most have had steel carriers and all had 4 pinions. We've run the factory low gearsets in 700hp, 3000lb cars with no failures.

Billy:

I thought that "your" Valient was supposed to be your daughters race car.

Do you think my Scamp would like a low gear set? I've been thinking of doing that whenever I go through the tranny.
