? many passes ? "running the valves" in your racecar? - 07/08/09 05:16 PM
I like to change the oil every 20-25 passes and run the valves at the same time. Overkill???

About the oil change interval for me, too, 20-25 runs. I admit it might be a bit excessive, but I'm anal about that, and it's worked, so why mess?
I've got 15 passes on this oil, and will probably change it after the Beaver Nostalgia Nats this weekend.
As far as the valves, I go over them the beginning of the season and let it go.

I use brad Penn oil so i go a little longer on it. As far as valves, they are usually a first indicator of something going wrong. Ounce the valve train stabilizes they rarely move. ALot of times nothing gets adjusted, just go in and check and make sure all is good in the hood.

Mobil 1 20-25 passes. Valve covers off to check pushrod tips, rocker alignment, oiling. Big spring pressures should be looked at,might as well check lash. SS/AH guys do it every 3-4 passes.

I change the oil once or twice a season...but I don't get to the track as often as I would like (probably less than 40 passes on the oil). Valves, once at the begining...then again if if starts acting or sounding weird.

Well you wanna talk anal I guess that is me. We check the lash pretty much after EVERY trip to the track. I usually run the oil for no more than 20 passes or so, never at the track but when we come back froma race and are in that area.

I put new oil in at the start of the season (March).
Run that until July or 50-60 passes. Then store the car over the winter with fresh oil too. If I race a lot, I will change it again during the season (50-60 passes).
I check the valve lash every couple months, but it doesn't need it. A new build requires checking it every race day until I am sure nothing is changing.

"We take our motor apart several times per season so the oil get's changed then."

I work with a guy that runs a big block chevy in PSCA (Hot Street) class. He checks the valves after every run and changes the oil after every race. His motor gets freshened after 70 passes. But the motor sees 9000+RPMs.

I change my oil after 6 to 8 passes and check the valves also..9000 rpm plus..I also run Lucas 0w20 pro stock oil also..

I think there's a wide variety of types of motors on this post. Like most things the more power or rpm's the more preventative maintenance. Roller cams will need less checks than solid lifter cams. Some guy's will get more junk in their oil buy pulling the valve covers causing more problems than if they didn't do anything. I change my oil with every oil pan replacement.

It all depends on what setup you run. Stock cam, the valve covers come off when it hits the bone yard. Proven, known solid lifter flat tappet combos, once stabilized, once a year? A radical roller, with aggressive ramps and very high spring pressures, every few passes, or if the car slows any measurable amount. Never had a catastrophic failure (whole engine lost due to valvetrain trouble) but have caught many parts going away, was able to fix and race the rest of the day.

I run the valves every spring, they haven't changed since I put the inner springs in after break in. Oil gets changed once or twice a year. Dave
