how do i hault fore and aft movement with elephant ears - 07/08/09 12:15 AM

i have a big block A body with elephant ears , no mid plate and a stock trans mount . what would be the best way to stop the motor from moving/? i have an alternater adjuster mounted to the frame and the alternater mounted to the head. i recently riped the mounting tab off the alt. so i know it is moving . i launch 3700 of a brake

Competition Engineering and S&W race cars make fore-aft limiter kits. One is good, two is better. I mounted our's on the pan rail, but getting a straight shot to the K-member is not that important if running two bars (triangulated to frame) to the back or front of the block. The trans mount in our car was destroyed without a limiter.

We have one on our car and it goes from the block at the midplate to the frame. You can take it from your elephant ears to your frame I imagine or even do it like mine.

I have some pictures somewhere.

I use the motor mounts on the engine to the frame rail
1 on each side

I have 1/2" thick elephant ears on my elephant / A-Body car . Is fore and aft movement an absolute ? My car`s new in that I haven`t run the new engine combo under full power yet , and this thread`s got me thinkin'.

Without limiters it will happen. A flat plate isnt very
good to hold the load/G-force in the direction you are
using it in.... great for vertical loading... but
after time it may end up cracking.... the wider the
spread the ears are the more it moves

this is the limiter I made for mine, not real pretty but it's under the car out of sight and most important it works. Easy to make and install too

As I recaal, I wheelhopped my ex-race Chall w/1/4"(?)3/8"? ears once and spit out the water pump hsg to block gaskets.
No fun losing your coolant away from home in a siamese bore block.

I built one by making 2 steel tabs, bolt 1 to the ear for the motormount, the other to the bolts holding the ear to the chassis and weld a 1/2" rod to them, you only need 1 and can put it on either side, it also comes out with the motor so it's 1 less thing to remove when doing an R&R.
