440 with 440source stroker kit - 07/02/09 07:17 AM

Who here has a 440 with the 500 or 512 stroker kit from 440source. I was wondering how reliable their products are. I'm putting it in my 68 Charger it will be more of a cruiser and run it a few times. I was wondering what kind of complete setup you have and how much hp and torque you have.which is better the 500or512 stroket I plan on putting a holley 870cfm carb and use stock heads and was wanting to put purple camshafts in but was wondering which ones to get I'm looking for 425-450 rwhp.

I bought their basic stroker kit 3 years ago, 438 in a 383 block, and it's held up great. everything was within spec as delivered, and I've got 3 years, 3500 miles on it without any problems.

however, lately there seems to be some issues with some of their "additional" parts, and it would seem their customer service has fallen off some? I've only heard the negatives lately, and only 1 side of the story because I don't think Brandon comes on here anymore, he's tired of all the hate and bashing he got from the members, the majority of which was simply because the parts are made in china.

I plan on shopping with them again, if that tells you how my own personal experiences with them have gone.

You think Brandon could take a hint

i have one of the source 512 combos. it's doing 9.5's & so far holds up well. my only gripe is having to chamfer grind the bearings, but i'm real good at that task now.

putting stock heads on a large ci motor kind of defeats the purpose. but I guess you could upgrade later. there are better products out here. check with DRAM.

With a good set of heads you can get that from a 440 on pump gas. You need to feed the bigger strokes, so expect to spend some on heads, cam and intake. You don't want to run a purple shaft... run something by anyone that was designed in the last 5 years, and run it around 250°@.050. That 870 is small for a 505 (which is the 4.25 stroke kit in a .030 over block) For longevity, dont use a piston shorter than 1.45" adn it will last. Plan to have your shop balance the thing, and expect to have the rods corrected and the crank carefully checked.

nearly 14,000 miles on a 440source 512ci kit in the convertible. dozen 1/4 mile passes. the stuff is stronger than factory parts so it should last a long long time.

I'll be giving the below 440source-stuff a good 'work-out' by the end of the year I think...

wondering why you wouldnt step all the way up to the 543ci Assembly ??? same money, more cubic inches...i bought one of the 543 2 years ago, very good stuff...and dont let the talk of china scare you.. they was a Big story on all these H-beam rods a year or 2 back... almost all of them you buy are "BLANKS"that are made in china and finished at the manafactors shop and then places their Logo on them...As far as Brandon goes..I dont blame him..when there is a really good MOPAR site like this one and if you enjoy reading all the Threads and hearing all the good stories,Who would want to take a bashing all day/night??? there are more people happy with 440 source than not !!!! when they hit the market several years ago, they were the ones who helped drive the CRAZY cost of these assemblies down...they offered good products and a good price..and all the "others" had to follow cause they were losing money to them...Muscle motors was where i used to get my assembly's until they came along..my first 499ci kit was half the cost of muscle motors..Buy what you want and do make sure you check everything out before assembly..But, good stuff...

Good advice no matter which company you go with.

I am considering the 512 kit because it is the biggest CI without major mods. Make a good bracket motor in the cuda.

Go to the tech archives and read a few of the articles there. I've posted about 10 articles where I've used 440Source components in various builds.

Like I say they are pretty tough. I had 65 runs on that motor last year shifting 7400-7500 rpms. Turned it 8K once when the shifter malfunctioned, and it was on the chip in a heart beat, no kidding. Engine was a 557" Indy Maxx block, with plenty of compression and running alky injection....
Pulled a best of 1.07 60ft...Even though it was a digger, that's a getting down the track.
Ran consistent 141-143 MPH in the heat it went a 144..
Just wished the guys who built it know ed how to tune a little better

IF/WHEN I build another I'll go full on with the 440 Source parts. The more "hate" I read on them, the more I'm inspired. Until then I'll wait until my "LY" engine breaks.

440 Source 4.15 here, engine not started yet but crank miked great. Got a deal on Eagle rods with .990 pins so I went with those, but they're made in China too, I think. I don't know if my Ross pistons, Hughes cam, and Edelbrock heads are Made in USA or not.

Including oil pickups... But if you pay attention to the details the parts are quite useable & provide options that were available only to those with allot of excess cash in the past...
