Helmet sizing

Helmet sizing - 06/16/09 11:10 PM

well, since I might be trying a few test/tune sessions to see how the truck runs...I need a helmet. (they're required anything under 13s right?) while I don't KNOW if I'm in the 12s...I sure as heck hope I am! Driveshaft loops are needed faster than 13, right?

anyway...how do I size the helmet? looking at jegs, some are listed with hat size, which I already know mine, but some are listed with maybe a head circumference? where to I measure that? around my forehead above the ears? or is there a head "height" measurement?--for the full face helmets

what do you all prefer? full face helmet or open face? I'm leaning towards full face, but my only experience with helmets was a loaner at an indoor go-kart track near K-town, Germany

Hmm...lucky for me, I'm not old and don't need them!

actually, I can wear contacts if I needed to...although 95% of the time, I don't wear them and I can see just fine...my uncorrected eyesight is something like 20/30

Re: Helmet sizing - 06/16/09 11:35 PM

where would I go to try them on? jegs/summit have a nice selection on their website, but 90% of them are back ordered, which means I probably couldn't even go down to the store here in town to try them on first.

I suppose I could stop by a motorcycle shop, but...I don't want a motorcycle helmet!
(although...I suppose they're all pretty much the same)

Just go to your local ATV/Motorcycle shop and try them on. Usually there are just sized small, medium, large etc. If you have a brand name in mid try there web site. It might list cap size etc like 7 1/8 etc..

Thanks. there's a Harley shop in Dublin that I drive past, and a Honda motorcycle/ATV store in Marysville that I drive by as well...I'll stop at the honda place first and see what they have.

what is the preferred safety rating? NHRA's quick faq page says Snell K98, M2000, SA2000, M2005, or SA2005 is good for "most drivers"

if a helmet meets say, M2000, does it pretty much meet all the others as well? is there a preferred safety rating over any of the others?

Well I went to Jegs and got a ZAMP helmet. I think mine is a medium..and idk if you have seen me before but i'm quite tiny. Idk what everyone else wears...so for all I know I might have a huge head. My advice would be to try them on...also idk how much of its true..but I heard that they are going to closed faced helmets soon. I have a closed one cause it makes me feel safer..we cant hurt the pretty face But yeah, just go and try them on. You want something that is comfortable.

Re: Helmet sizing - 06/17/09 01:38 AM

my fitted hat size is a 7 3/8 which most of the sizing charts said that's a large helmet, but yes, I would like to try them on first!

Maybe I'll swing by the store too and see if they have some on the shelf despite that their website says "ships on 7/9/09"

Just went through this, as my 2000 helmet (mint condition) is out of date according to NHRA Tech; it's like the harness deal now. Went with the 2005 spec, as it's the latest. I like full-face, not open-face; steering wheels & dashes taste like crap, and I like my jaw to work too...
Best one I found (& bought) was a G-Force 3006, which is full face, big eyeport. Got it from saferacer.com, great price & fast shipping, paid $219.99. I'm 7 1/4 measured just above the ears, prefer glasses, and don't use the shield in a door car. I removed the bill. The Medium fits fine, not too tight, not at all loose. Too tight and it would be distracting, too loose is not safe in an impact.
Sizing S/M/L specs are published in several places, saferacer.com, helmetcity.com, etc.
The non-automotive helmets I tried were either too big externally to get in/out of a cage, or too gaudy for my tastes, or were too tight in M using glasses & too loose in L.
Helmets are pretty personal, and this is the 1st one I've bought without trying it on, but I'm very happy with it.

I had a Bell DOT helmet before I got to ZMax for Pinks AllOut and had to upgrade to a SnellM2005 to meet NHRA rules. Lucky for me CV Products had a very nice lady who knew more about saftey equipment and Helmets than anybody I've ever seen to help me fit my new SafeQuip helmet.Although I agree with Fred and the others go somewhere and try them on because everyone likes them to fit diffrently.

I just order the xxxlarge and everyone seems to think it fits me well. I go and try some on to see what feels right and don't buy the cheap one thats a little too tight thinking it will stretch enough, they aren't like sneakers.
