Synthetic rear end lube bad for race car? - 05/27/09 04:45 PM

I was told today that I should not be using synthetic lube in my Dana rear. He said that synthetic does not have the ability to protect against the "shock" of a transbrake and heavy loading. Says conventional is much better.This is news to me as I have had synthetic in there for a number of years without issue!
Anyone else heard of this???

I have only run synthetic in my Dana for 5 straight years now. Zero problems and probably close to 1000 passes. Course I don't use a transbrake, but I don't believe conventional is better in this application.

Been using synthetic in both cars with a Dana for years... Thousands of runs with a trans brake.
Never a problem. Pull the cover off and check at the beginning of the season every year. No problems at all.

why would you wanna use syntetic?
Isnt it more expensive?

a little bit but well worth it imo. never heard anybody say not to use it????? just helps with being more consistent imo. less temp sensitive.

Been using Mobil 1 Synthetic 75w-90 for many years in our Dana and so far so good. Plenty of transbrake launches!

I use whatever Richmond suggested. I believe 75-90 synpower is whats in it

i have no idea why, but moser specifically recommended against using synthetic in their rear ends. i didn't bother asking why. i just do as i'm told.

mark williams says no synthetic also,, says it doesnt "cling" to the gear as well and std oils

We tried it with our Outlaw car and burned up a ring and pinion. We don't use it now.

I run Red Line Heavy Shockproof synthetic gear oil in my rear...I think that is the only thing helping out the hard street gears I run in the 8 3/4...T-brake 60' low 1.30's 3358lbs

i'm using castrols synthetic & have so for the past 5 years. we had the diff apart during last season. the diff man said everything was like brand new. even the oil still looked like light colored honey so i poured it back in. synthetic diff oil sure does smell.
