A body race weight

A body race weight - 05/02/09 02:19 AM

After scaling the car, i,m a little surprised by the total weight and the front-to-rear %. Its 3172 total with me in it and 55 front and 45 rear. Car is a 68 Dart all fiberglass front end with stock 74 k member and disk brakes. For a race car its alittle porky. What kind of numbers do you guys have with your race setups?

Getting the car lighter starts to cost a lot of money. What gets the most bang for the buck when trying to lighten the front?

Re: A body race weight - 05/02/09 04:48 AM

Well my 70 Duster was 2950 with no ballast I raced it at 3050. 480" RB iron heads 727TF and Dana, Back half, all steel, lexan windows, glass hood and bumpers, gutted doors and trunklid, Aerospace brakes, 8.50 cage. With the 100lbs in the trunk it was 53/47

My Valiant weighed 3470 with a 511" low deck with B1 heads a glide and dana. Car had glass hood and bumpers rest was all steel. Working glass windows, full interior, including back seat, mini tubbed with ladder bars coil overs font and back with Aerospace brakes. Weight bias was 52/48, then engine was moved as far back as possible without modifying the firewall.

My 68 Barracuda dont really count. But FWIW here is the run down. All aluminum B1 low deck, powerglide and dana. Full 2x3 square frame with a 7.50 25.4, mild steel cage. Front struts rear 4 link. Aluminum interior and Pro Glass lexan windows. Glass front end rest of car is steel including working trunklid. Car weighs 2840+- right now with a 47/53 bias.

Trimming the K member a bunch and brakes are the two easiest ways to drop some weight off the nose. Aluminum brake strut rods will drop a little weight as well, but the K and brakes are huge gains.

Re: A body race weight - 05/02/09 01:58 PM

You guys are all so heavy. Mine is 2329 without me in it. glass bumpers, deck lid, hood, doors, steel fenders, fabricated mounts for bumpers, tube chassis, lexan, 10" motor setback, full aluminum interior, and best of all SMALL BLOCK. Moving the motor back is the easiest way to get your balance a little better. I know it is not always cheap,, but.

Re: A body race weight - 05/02/09 08:12 PM

Mine weighed 2830 lbs. with me in it. Iron head 340, 727, 8 3/4" w/11" x 3" drums,
fiberglass ft. fenders, hood, Lexan windows, full 8 gallon cell and 2 Group 27 batteries.

Since I broke the rear end, I swapped the 8 3/4" for a Dana 60 w/ MW aluminum spool,
40 spline gun-drilled axles, 4-wheel Aerospace dics, 904, LRT crossmember and .750"
CM fabbed steering. Oh, and a MP aluminum master cylinder.

I estimate it will weigh 2730 lb. when its done. Unfortunately, my gut has saw fit to
try keeping up with my age or it would be about 30 lb. lighter.
