Anyone here use SpeedMaster products? - 04/09/24 04:30 PM

Yes, SpeedMaster Known for the $89 small block, duel plane, duel engine airgap style intake manifold you see on ebay and swap meets. Did you know they made A LOT of stuff for Mopars and they are not China parts, But America and Australian made? Seems like unaffordable choice for street cars and possibly race as well. Going to look at a set of heads for my budget 360 street motor, but wanted to see what people's experience on here was with them.

Pro Form is a Chinese company owned and operate by them, Speedmaster is an Australian company that either got bought by Pro Form or they bought Proform shruggy confused scope up

Speedmaster heads aren’t made in china?

I thought April fools day was over a week ago.

Re: Anyone here use SpeedMaster products? - 04/09/24 05:27 PM

I think PBR has bought several sets of their heads.
I just bought one of their intakes for the 340 Valiant project, and it looks good.
About 1/3 of the price for an Edelbrock, so I figured it was worth at least checking out.
I generally avoid Chinese stuff if possible, but in this case the wallet over-rode morality.
In my defense, the other 90% of the expenditures for this deal are US-made stuff.

Yes they do have manufacturing in china, the distribution enters are in us and auzie land. Guess I read their page wrong,, or they made their page look like it was not chinese made products. Either way, still like to know I anyone is currently using their stuff or has used their products.

Re: Anyone here use SpeedMaster products? - 04/09/24 06:40 PM

My assessment would be that for the most part the Chinese heads have gotten better over the last 5-10 years.
I get them(Chinese heads) in the shop for a look over and/or some tweaks fairly regularly.
It’s not often I come across something bad enough where it was likely it would have caused an issue down the road.

Of course, if no one looks at them, then it’s a crap-shoot……… and something like this gets missed.
This was particularly poor seat machining, which would likely have become problematic had it been left like this.
This example was a SM RPM style BBM head(which I haven’t seen them offer in several years).

Well $800 bucks lighter in the wallet, I have some heads I can run on that little engine. Probably have the shop check them, just in case.

I’m about 90% sure you will like them. I’ve touched and ported over 15 sets so far and have four more set’s sitting here waiting to be ported. Edelbrock guides I’ve found to be a hair on the tight side to my liking. Speedmaster heads are a touch on the loose side which I like. I did find one intake guide that was .003 over so I changed that one. You will probably find the valve springs are set up to lose so check that out. Valve job is your typical basic valve job. Lots and I mean days worth of reading on forabodiesonly about these heads pinned in the small block area. From flow numbers to porting tech.

Marsh performance sells them with better valves and springs

I have a set of their assembled heads and stainless rockers going onto a stock bottom end budget 360 build for my wagon. Hoping to have it running by late May, just waiting on some parts right now to finish the motor.

I had their air gap copy manifold and returned it after reading it leaves close 30hp on the table compared to a real air gap...Ended up with a single plane instead for my build, but some parts don't justify the savings benefit in my opinion. I was going from 318 iron heads with 1.77" intake valves that I sold for $300 local, so the $900 for the assembled Speedmaster heads were a no brainer, and so far on disassembly they have checked out okay.

Re: Anyone here use SpeedMaster products? - 04/10/24 02:24 PM

The Speedmaster intake is a dual plane basically copied from an LD4B on the bigger runner LD340. I ported one and it was ok but I personally would never run on except on maybe a very mild street car. I bought it during the 40% off Black Friday sale for my son in Colorado but sold it after I ported it. To many better intakes out there. If you got your heads for 800.00 you got a good deal this time of year. They are around 1190.00 off Speedmaster or summit. I paid around 733.00 a pair for complete heads during the sale.

It was a Facebook market deal. Guy had a falling out with a rooked machine shop and was unloading his unused parts. He gave me such a deal, I got him info on some parts he couldn't' find to finish project.

Re: Anyone here use SpeedMaster products? - 04/10/24 08:25 PM

PBR, what kind of flow did you get out of the intake ?
I'm putting it on a .030-over 340 in a '68 Valiant that still has J heads - will upgrade later - in a relatively mild street/strip build.
Heads on the thing are probably fairly weak, 1.88 intake valves, cam is 233/240 @ .050, .474 lift, on 110 straight up.
Converter seems to be a bit above 2500 stall.
It's getting my old 750 DP, 4.10s & 255/60 drag radials - no more room until until the manly tools get put to use.

PCE in the part number is Pro Comp products right? I built a BB Chevy w/ a set of the Pro Comp 320 cc heads on it. They hadn't been run very long before I went through it, but it had some severe valve guide wear. Soft materials.

This is going to be a little confusing as when I posted this on forabodiesonly years ago I explained it as I went along. One of these tests were done along with my sons old style Torquer intake. These test were done on a stock set of Speedmaster heads and a slightly ported set (280 cfm) try to follow the notes above the tests.

I have used the head castings they look good to me; in fact I think the castings may be better quality than some USA made heads. I then buy good valves and springs, never had a problem.

Almost everything they make is a copy (ripoff) of something a US manufacturer designed and made. I don't support companies like that, because it hurts the companies that put in all the R&D work to bring the original part to the market. How would you feel if you put a lot of time and money into making a product, just to have someone copy it in China and sell it as your competition for less money? This video just got posted a couple days ago about a valve body design they stole.

Sounds like a good plan. Where is your cell phone, tv, dishwasher, washer and dryer, carper, furniture, car parts, toys, rv vehicles, booze, some food, gasoline, tools, and everything else you use daily made at.

I had that air gap intake on a stock stroke 318 enginemasters build that I bought that pumped out 477 horsepower. Under 10.5 compression, pump gas, flat tappet cam, etc, etc.
Ran mid 11’s in a 3400 pound car with a smaller camshaft than was used in the competition.
Those intakes may well make less power, but they make more than enough for 95% of the guys who are going to run a dual plane to begin with. That little motor I had more than proved it.

Makes me wonder why the two extremely sharp guys who built this motor and took it to the competition left 30 horsepower on the table. Hmmm

In my experience the off shore heads don't make the power. Even if you get bare heads and do a good valve job, porting and quality parts they are down 30-40 hp on an engine dyno. They must cut corners with the casting cores in the ports and chambers. They just don't fill the cylinder the same.

I would never buy a set of their heads but obviously some people do. I will tell you that you should never, ever buy a SpeedMaster 8 stack setup. I had a customer buy that setup and then he asked me to tune it. I told him it couldn't be tuned.

Saving money was the reason I bought them. buying and rebuilding core heads $1500. Buying Edelbrock heads and having to go through them because of 'Edelbrock issues' $2500. So for less money, I got heads that I could have the shop look at and not worry about. If the motor only makes 300'ish hp with those head I'm fine with that for a street motor. Now I got to find cheap roller rockers and pushrods for it.

Why would you compare a stock intake vs one they massaged for an engine masters competition? That's a bit silly...

I agree that the intakes for 90% out there are fine, but if I can find a used version of the real thing which is actually better as cast, then why not? Unfortunately, used small block mopar cylinder heads aren't easy or cost effective to find used where I am, or I would have sprung for a used set of edelbrocks or better.

SpeedMaster seems awfully expensive for what it is. They're marking it way up.

Why let greedy corporations like Speedmaster sit in their ivory tower making money when it's much cheaper to deal directly with the source in Zhejiang, China and buy from Ningbo Beyond Auto Parts Co., Ltd???

Black Friday sale every year. 40% off everything so heads set up with hydraulic roller springs cost around 733.00 a pair. 277.00 each bare.

Speedmaster. Part number prefix PCE. Pro Comp Electronics. Remember them? Pirates from way back.

Doesn't matter. Looks like Speedmaster has been scrubbed from Summit and Jegs. Probably afraid of the legal ramifications of selling the crap. I guess guys will have to go to Amazon, eBay and other quality retailers for their products moving forward.

I get mine shipped right from Speedmaster79. Gonna finish a set this weekend and start porting another set by Monday. 2.055 valve so they will flow 308-315cfm when finished.

pittsburghracer what changed your views on these heads? You used to be 100 percent against them and really the castings have been the same for a long long time. There early cnc heads cut the guides way down but they stopped doing that.

Have you started to race weekly as on here you seemed to race a few times a year unless your getting out more which would be great or is weekly like two weeks in a row at times?

Back when pro comp owned the company I shied away from them. A forabodiesonly member shared his results then for the last three years over bought multiple set during the 40% off sale. I started porting heads after I stopped enjoying it years ago only doing my own. I doubled my porting prices up to 850.00 and I’m enjoying it again probably porting 15-20 sets of Smallblock Mopar Speedmaster heads. The only issue I’ve found so for was one intake guide was .003 over sized. These heads will easily support 600 plus horsepower. Their cnc program with only get you in the 280-285cfm area.

Ohh and I never really post about racing on this site anymore but attended five big money races last year and ran 15 races at those events alone. So yes I race more than most.

Good deal.

I had always thought they were one in the same but just a name change in the public view. Unless they changed in the last two years the heads all have the PCE part numbers. The sets ive got from 2012 is identical to the 2022 castings. Not sure if I have the 2012 invoice to see if it says PC or SM. Such junk castings from 2012 are still going strong and getting abused. whistling

Not that any of it matters. Ive looked at some of the stuff you have done on fabo. I should probably look on fabo but did you ever plug and re drill for offset pushrods/rockers?

I’ve done it an recommend not doing it. The pinch isn’t the problem. Edelbrock or Speedmaster heads can and will flow over 330cfm with a 2.08 valve without moving the pinch. Stock rocker offset.

Speedmaster has been removed for my approved suppliers/mfg.'s list. Reference the vid posed on here recently they are not what they say they are. I realize reverse engineering/counterfeit products are a reality and more than likely I have unshiftingly purchased some, but to knowingly support such enterprises I can not do.

Should get a list of racers together on other boards and make a group banning this and other companies counterfeiting components.

Try for a name like "Racers Against Pirated Engineering Designs" as the tech thieves hate being drawn out or any kind of attention.

I agree with much of what he has to say on this subject, but I certainly DO NOT agree with his 'fix' at the end. Do you?

As I said; his 'fix' at the end was just nuts. But, he did make some solid points throughout.
