ok might be splitting hairs on my 8.75 but............ - 04/25/09 10:26 PM

rebuilding my 8.75 after breaking bearing caps, went with 742 case billet caps, bolts thru housing to preload caps, now is there any gains in welding the inside of housing where the bubble part (for lack of a better word)where it meets the main part of the housing just curios i know someone out there has tried this before. any takers ?

nothing to think about. no matter what you do to it, it's still prone to break

i understand that the 8.75 is not the best rear axle outthere. i cant spend what it takes to go dana or 9 inch. have done the math not in my racing budget, just need to do all i can to make the thing live.

You would be better to put a back brace on it, it
would be able to hold more load(better leverage).
Some people here just dont like the 8 3/4 but its
been doing great in my car (with a 1.19 60' but my
car is light)

Yes, thats not much different than mine, you should
have put it on when you shortened it, they are a must
if you 60' at all

I prefer to make them 2" X 3" or better is 2" X 4"
and cut it yourself. Just square the tube on the back
of the diff and use a set of dividers to scribe it
for the contour, I run it right out to the flange
EDIT
Make sure it clears your shocks

I went with a heavy gauge backbrace and my load bolt threaded tubes are welded to the outer brace and inner pumpkin. My rear is fairly narrow.

is it ok for the bolts true the housing to be on the boltfor the adjuster lock or should it be beside it ?

Put the load bolts in so that they just press on the
center of the caps.... if you have seen a stock cap
break you will see that they break near the center of
the cap. I like to weld a heavy wall tube to the back
of the housing then weld it to the back brace, that
way you dont get oil in the back brace... then weld
a nut on the back brace so its holding the load.
Look at Crazy's pic and you can see how its all done
EDIT
if it presses on the bolt... no big deal it JUST
pressing on it, I just snug it on the bolt/cap
then tighten the lock nut
