Cam Break-in How much Lighter on the Springs?? - 04/24/09 03:48 AM

As the title states, what kind of pressure do you use for breaking in a new cam? I'll be running a Conventional Flat Tappet with EDM'ed Solid Lifters... Thanks

if your springs are doubles, then remove the inner spring & you should be right. apply lots of break in paste NOT that red goo comp cams supplies.

On are stocker the break in springs are 100lbs on the seat. After it is broke in and we change the springs. The seat pressure is 170 to 180 and over the nose is about360.This is with a stock lift Hyd cam.

Sounds like the stock Edelbrock springs which is the lighter set that I have & I'm considering using but kinda worried about..My other springs are Beehives so no double to remove the inner from... I'd considered stock type springs but concerned about coil bind...

Yep...stock eddy springs are what I used. Fast68plymouth told me it would be fine...and it was.

I have broken in a bunch of flat tappet cams(hydraulic and solids) with 140 to 160 lbs on the seats and 340 to 375 open, I don't now because of all the issues with the bad lifters and bad oil If you can get 100 lbs on the seat and 250 to 275 open that should work well, remember to make sure the motor starts instantly and gets rev to 1500 RPM plus to 2500 RPM for at leats 20 minutes

Always!! I've built plenty of stock stuff & tuned lots of hotrods, in the past I would have fired it with the Edelbrock springs without a second thought...Just want to take every precaution knowing how many are lossing cams.. I've never lost one & don't care to start on this motor... I'm thinking I might fire it on the dyno so I can load the rings some while the cam is breaking in...

I wouldn't sweat it too much. You're ahead of the game with the EDM lifters; smart move.

No problems so far with mine and I'm running about 340# open. I'm running dual springs and I did remove the inner for break in. Also used Brad Penn oil, and GM EOS just to be safe.

The whole idea is to reduce the risk of wiping a lobe, so just enough to run 3000 rpm is all you need. I like the above numbers. You can try more, but the more the more risk. Sometimes you get lucky with full pressure, but do you feel lucky, punk? (Clint Eastwood)

I also like 100# to break in solids. You arent worried about anything with breaking in the cam as far as lift, bind etc...you simpy wont be turning it that high like Jim says. The other thing to do, is mark the tops of the lifters, turn engine over by hand first, make sure they are rotating before you do anything else. If so, your 95% there anyhow, go with a 100ish # spring, all will be fine.
