How far is your drive to your nearest track?

How far is your drive to your nearest track? - 09/25/23 05:48 PM

Unfortunately, they closed down Kansas International Dragway this year. It was about 20 miles away and we even drove the car out there a few times, raced and drove home.

Now the nearest is over an hour away.

It sure was nice to be spoiled and have it great for all those years. fan

Milan is about 40 minutes away from my house. The next closest are Lapeer, Onadega, Ubly, Norwalk, Dragway 42, and Martin, all within ~2 hours away.

Re: How far is your drive to your nearest track? - 09/25/23 06:55 PM

20 minutes. Comes in handy when I need a part I didn't bring to the track. I've managed to drive home, remove a trans from one car, remove the converter & take it to the track where I've replaced the faulty one in the racecar & only missed 1 round of qualifying. Went on to win the meeting. How's that for luck?

Re: How far is your drive to your nearest track? - 09/25/23 07:01 PM

Englishtown was 90 miles for me, now closed
Atco was 140 miles now closed
Cecil county (best radial prep) 190 miles
Lebanon Valley (just starting to radial prep) 125 miles and No tolls
Island dragway (No radial prep) 90 miles

Most tracks are more than an hour for me, with the farthest(but the best) 3to 3.5 hours. IF you want to race its what you do i guess shruggy

1/8 mile track is 50 miles away. Brainerd is 100 miles away. Rockfalls is 130 miles away. 3 decent tracks, and not much interest in driving further, when diesel prices are so high. I like racing near home so family and friends can come as well.

Re: How far is your drive to your nearest track? - 09/25/23 07:05 PM

Closest track is 11 miles away, but I don't race there (rules change in the middle of the race, 3 rounds of buy backs, score boards don't 1/2 work, purse changes from gate to winners circle, ect, ect). Then I have Bristol, Tn 68 miles (they run races sat & sun, tnt fri) , London Ky 105 miles, Knoxville, Tn 55 miles. Spend the majority of my racing time at Bristol or London.

I opted out of a race 4 hours away a couple of weekends ago mainly because of diesel prices. It just didn't make sense to spend $350.00 to win a $20 trophy. Last year they paid $500 to win my class but it got rained out and, for some reason, no payouts this year despite really good attendance. shruggy

Nearest , about 45 minutes. Preferred but a whole lot further than I'd like, 90 minutes.

Still no trailer here, but not having a functioning car for the track and having not been out since 2019, guess it probably doesn't matter.

Re: How far is your drive to your nearest track? - 09/25/23 07:22 PM

There is an 1/8 track 64miles, VERY unsafe to me people all in the staging lanes & burn out box, not saying I will never go back but, since my home track Houston Raceway Park is now closed I might have to give in LOL, the closest REAL 1/4 track is Pine Valley in Lufkin Tx 3 hours away, Ennis Tx, 3.5 hours away is the next one, VERY frustrated & just generally sad & bummed out , with my health issues I am pretty much out of time , I just cant be motivated to do much on the Charger now that HRP is gone frown

34 miles to my local track ( about a 45 minute drive ) , Island Dragway. I have been racing there for over 35 years . I will be going to Cecil County ( 154 miles , about 2 1/2 hours away one way ) for their two remaining Strange Street Car Shootouts to run 11.50 Index . Maple Grove is about two hours , 125 miles . Atco ( R.I.P. ) was about a two hour drive and Englishtown ( R.I.P. ) was about an hour away ... I work part time as a truck driver / operator and lately my travels have taken me down Rte 18 past Englishtown Rd. every time I pass it I get a sad feeling ... had a lot of fun at the their Mopar Atlantic Nats every year as well as running 11.50 Index there right up until they closed .

5 miles to I-57. 1/8 mile track. When I started going out there 50 some years ago, they had dials, not a tree at the starting line. Hitchhiked out there a couple of times before I got my driver's license. And a couple of times after I lost my license.
drive

We can hear them running most Saturdays when at home. Ran out there a lot over the years. KOS action 8 years or so ago was my most recent activity. Just getting too lazy to work on the Cuda much anymore. If I don't race it, I don't have to fix stuff. Just routine maintenance.

Closest 1/4 mile track is 90 minutes from me. Hoping to be out there in the Spring after some off season tinkering with the car. Goal is to crack the 11's.

RT 66 is about 30 minutes from my house, but they have not reopened after Covid for bracket racing.

US 41 is about an hour and is now home.

Coles County is roughly 3 hours south. I try to get there once or twice a year.

Byron, Cordova, Union Grove, and Martin are all also around 3 hours, but I haven't been to any of them for years.

Re: How far is your drive to your nearest track? - 09/25/23 11:51 PM

From '94 through 2000 in NorCal, it was about an hour to either of 2 tracks, Sac or Sears Point.
Usually 1.5 hours from my current place to Spokane, if traffic is decent.
But towing through Spokane kinda sucks.
I'm in the middle of relocating to about 20-30 minutes from Firebird (Boise area).

Same here, I don't live too far from Jeff. I like the full quarter mile best, so usually it's the Rock or Brainerd. But I probably put a lot more passes in at out of town tracks for events like F.A.S.T and Drag Week. Which is fine with me, I've always had ramblin' fever.

Closest (Darlington) is about 40 minutes away. Rockingham and Fayetteville are about an hour and 15 minutes away. Those are the closest 1/4 mile tracks.
There are a bunch of 1/8 mile tracks in the 40 minutes to an hour and a half drive range.

Re: How far is your drive to your nearest track? - 09/26/23 03:28 PM

Some of these tracks I haven't been to in decades*, but FWIW:
Capitol 1/8 & 1/4 (MD) - ~ 65 miles
Mason-Dixon 1/8 & 1/4 (MD) - ~ 60 miles
* Sumerduck 1/8 (VA) - ~ 65 miles
Maryland Int'l Raceway 1/8 & 1/4 (MD) - ~ 75 miles
* Cecil County 1/8 & 1/4 (MD) - ~ 110 miles

We also lost a couple of tracks in the last 10+ years:
Old Dominion 1/8 (VA) ~ 30 miles
75-80 1/8 & 1/4 (MD) ~ 45 miles

My home track is 300 miles away, a couple of 1/8 milers closer, but one is rough and other has really, really, really short shutdown. We usually make the Spring Fling race in Vegas, thats about 1200.

Vegas 124
Wild horse pass (Phoenix) 190
Barona 190
Irwindale 200
Famoso 304
Sacramento 555

Living in the west kinda sucks…. I probably race at Famoso more than any on the list unfortunately, but then again, I’m pretty much just a “special event” kind of hobby racer that puts on a handful of passes a year. I haven’t run a “points” deal since 2016. I’m really starting to question why even have a racecar…..

Sonoma is only 75 miles from me in Tracy, CA. But a [censored] tow from the Central Valley. Either across two different 2 lane highways (traffic) or through the east bay area (TRAFFIC and idiots). Sometimes it's 2.5 hours each way. I would rather tow to Famoso!

Famoso is 206 miles
Redding is 228 miles
Fallon, NV is 263 miles, much of that uphill over the Hwy 80 summit
Samoa is 330 miles
Irwindale is 336 miles, but...what a great facility!

There are two spots, probably 2-3 miles from my house that we used frequently, and they were all concrete, then there are a couple more that are maybe 15? miles and they are blacktop. There is one spot we used to be at every week, that one was 24 miles from my house and blacktop. It would be great to go back to those times.

That’ll be 350 miles each way…. but we’ll have the time change on our side heading west on the way home. I’m hoping the game changer will be being 25min from Sturgis Dragway (1/8th mile). Other than that 320 miles to the MT track, and 281 to julesburg.

Re: How far is your drive to your nearest track? - 10/02/23 01:01 AM

I haven't raced in a very long time. Back then in Ohio I usually raced 4 times a week at the following. Mostly the first three tracks or occasionally Thompson , the Game Preserve or Dragway 42. Went to Norwalk once for a Thanksgiving race. Brrrr to cold to get any traction. Snowed on the way home. Never went back. Too many decent tracks much closer.

whistling Game preserve RT 88 - 9 mi (hooked better than any track around)
Quaker City - 28 mi
Meander - 17 mi aka Ohio Drag City
Sunset - 27 mi
Thompson - 30 mi
Dragway 42 - 78 mi
Norwalk - 96 mi

Now I live in N.E. Tennessee and i am way older. If I was to start racing again (haven't decided yet) it would probably be at Bristol at most once a week and maybe an occasional Nss race. (None close)

Bristol Dragway - 17 miles
Zmax Charlotte, N.C. - 150 mi
several smaller tracks that I have never been to in between
