This has information from 2012. What does that have to do with this year?

Fingers crossed there’s news that their website may have been hacked.

Re: Atco closed - 07/18/23 11:15 PM

That was 10 years ago. This was on their Facebook but not on their website https://atcodragway.com/. If this is real they must have decided today to close because just 20 hours ago on their facebook page they were inviting everyone back for next years Pan American Nationals. If it turns out that this is real it is probably the same as all the other famous old tracks closing. They were out in the country when they were built but now not so much. The land is now worth more than the track and if they cash out they don't have to listen to complaints from the neighbors that should have known better than to build right next to a race track.

Man that is a lot of work for someone to just hack a dragstrips website if true.....

But someone I race with just told me some .90 races that they used to attend there are canceled now.

Wha-wow...
I thought that was a place that'd always be around.
But, having lived in SoCal back in the day, I've said that before.

Hope it's just some weak-ethics-sponge-boy-in-his-Mom's-basement hackjob.

I'm seeing it's a done deal. Not hacked.

Re: Atco closed - 07/19/23 02:34 AM

I was heading to the August Divisional for my chassis reinspection. can't get any response from the local inspectors. Been trying since April. I guess Maple grove will be the next time I can get my sticker!

Re: Atco closed - 07/19/23 02:43 AM

total bummer , literally almost lost all the tracks i used to frequent. Long Island (westhampton) Raceway Park, now this .... Now im down to Lebanon Valley, Cecil (very far 190mile tow) and Island dragway ......fingers crossed they all stay open ??? You have to wonder what happened at Atco because the Copart deal was turned down, or so i thought because its a protected area (NJ Pine Barrens) I guess we will find out if the new owner wants to operate a dragstrip or some other plans for the property??

Re: Atco closed - 07/19/23 04:02 AM

Maybe, just maybe, it's time for NHRA to take some emphasis off of the 'Big Show' and big money, as well as well heeled 'sportsmen' with stackers and the financial ability to take weeks off of work, and then focus that effort on local racers, tracks, and operators while they still exist. But, that's the opinion of an old man.

Re: Atco closed - 07/19/23 11:20 AM

From what I've been reading it is true that Atco is closed for good. Lenny Capone the owner sold to an unknown source. Apparently was offered $8 mil from someone who wanted to keep it a race track but turned down that offer. Not sure if he got more from another person or if he didn't want it to be a race track anymore.

He was pi$$ed about getting blocked on the Copart/IAA deal by the racers speaking up to the Pines Commission...that's why he wouldn't sell to another racer. He was determined to sell the track to not be a track to spite everyone. New Jersey's Gary Chimeri...for the Long Islanders.

That is sad. Seen other people saying he wasn't liked by many of the racers so I wouldn't doubt it a bit.

I only ran at ATCO 3 or 4 times over the years but Dave Milcarek took the awesome sunset picture of my car launching at ATCO that I have in my sig.

Re: Atco closed - 07/19/23 01:48 PM

It's a shame about all the NY/NJ track closures.

Some people we know about an hour west of us have a cannabis farm for CBD products; definitely more $$$ potential there than a drag strip can make, if it simply comes down to money.

Buyer must remove promptly.......

And how much would that cost? I bet you would have over a million dollars moving and setting them up and they are already 16 years old.

The expense for this stuff boggles my mind nowadays.

Correlation does not equate to causation, and I sincerely doubt two kids at a red light on a Tuesday are gonna NOT hit it because there's a test n tune Friday an hour outside of town. Lots of tracks back in the 60s and 70s but listening to some folks you'd swear they were all street outlaws every night.
