Steering Wheel shift light

Not like a Fast and Furious car, but something similar. Any one do this? I would only be interested in the shift light part, not the lights that change color as RPM's get higher, but something that just flashes when you hit a pre-determined RPM.

Guess my idea is janky...

Functional I'm sure but may look out of place on a classic? (Assuming you have a classic)

I wired up a relay setup with an output from my efi system so the hood turn signal lights are also a shift light.

Not a classic... 1994 Dakota, but I like to keep the interior as "non race" as possible with out big tachs and shiftlights, sticking out everywhere, etc. Currently, my tach and shift light is mounted towards the floor and during the day, the shift light is hard to see. I want to keep it inconspicuous as possible..if possible. So looking for ideas other than the normal "shift light pen/gauge".

Haven't seen one like that before, but I like it! I think it would look right at home in your truck. That wheel would look out of place in an old car though.

Could you use an unused dash light? Maybe a red led in the 4x4 slot? It might glow orange, but unmistakable.

I think you would be better suited to hide it in your instrument panel somewhere by taking out a warning lamp or something.

I don't know what EFI you have but I have one of these in my car and it works over the can bus and has a programable display for all kinds of things. It can also be setup as a shift light by lighting the outer ring of LEDs. It is really a pretty cool setup that doesn't take up much room and can do a variety of things. They make it for several different EFI setups.

There are more sophisticated solutions if you need to have different shift points for gear changes.

Gotcha. Well one idea is looks like the bottom row of your cluster are warning lights? Maybe put a bright LED light behind an unused one (if there is one) and wire it to an rpm based output.

I put a shift light in one of the dash vents in one of my cars. You had to be looking for it to notice it. (when it wasn't lit ) Just a thought.

Needs to be hard to miss, rather than hard to see. I have had more than one guy think it wasn't working when it was. Just didn't see it.

Should hit you in the face when you are doing important things, like watching where you are going.

I mounted some LEDs inside my helmet when I had my dragbike. Just remember to unplug the cord when you take it off.

Just had an idea to be more advanced

Wire up an rpm activated output to trigger a capacitor attached to your shifting arm with an alligator clip. Super fast reaction time

That occurred in 10th grade auto and welding shop in 1960, The instructor had charged them up and left them on our desk tops on the first day of class, he did that as a way to teach us to not touch anything electrical in a car or anywhere else that we didn't know about or have insulated gloves on to work on that equipment
It worked
That would have gotten him fired and sued today or even 20 yrs. ago

Haha, yes that brings back memories. In high school, 1994 the instructor would have us hold the output of a magneto and light us up

charged up condensers from a points distributor bite pretty good as well.
i was "taught" that early in life.

My Racepak dash has built in shift lights but I don't like them so I added a Pro lite like pictured above.

I really didn't want a shift light stuck somewhere but may have to... Dash light wont be bright enough during the day when I am watching the track!

That's fine. The original question was about shift lights. My focus is race cars and making anything in the car as effective and useful for it's purpose as possible. Typically, a shift light (or tach for some old school guys) is a critical piece of hardware in a car where the driver does the shifting. Hitting the shift points accurately is a big deal. Hence, the in your face positioning. When a guy with a full face helmet, strapped in, with maybe a HANS, wheels in the air, paying attention to every thing else going on, says he didn't see it, it needs to be in his face.

A street car, cruiser, weekend car is a different situation. Every owner needs to decide what's best for their situation and needs.

i am thinking about a shift light, not sure of the color, that i could mount on the dash or a pillar [a small, super bright LED mounted flush] of my charger.
i really don't want a big, stand alone light, that is commonly used today.
i have an MSD box that has provisions for chips that could possibly be used to work a shift light at xxxx rpm. could that be connected to a say, 1/4" [or so] diameter LED mounted flush on the a pillar at eye level, to be used as a shift light ?
would that even be a viable idea ?

Mine is the smal LED Pro light and I have it mounted up next to my rear view mirror.

where next to the mirror, and what do you use for a trigger ? [TIA. ]
