"In May 2021 Hot Rod they had an article about E-Turbos that I found interesting. Basically, it is a modified turbocharger with an electric motor that also can use the exhaust energy to charge a battery. If I understand the technology correctly, the electric motor will spool the turbo faster but during normal driving use the waste exhaust energy to recharge a battery.

For max acceleration the car can not only use the ICE power but also the electric motors. During normal driving using the motor, it can charge the battery for the electric motors. Garrett and Borg Warner are both working on these for both 12v and 48v systems.

Lots of new technology surrounding this including high speed motors and controls. It appears this will be first used in hybrid cars but F1 Racing has played with it and I can see the technology spilling over into drag cars

Eventually, the politics becomes visible.
Washington (and many blue States) want NO fuel-burning vehicles produced, as soon as possible (except for limousines).
After that, none can be sold.
After that, punitive taxation.
After that, seized.

There are also devices that create DC electrical current from hot gas streams, kinda like a thermocouple “on steroids”, that can boost battery charge for later acceleration or hill climbing. I read science abstracts announcing improvements in these devices at least twice a year. They are still searching for a “home run.”

In my younger years I learned to hate hearing: Gotta buy another $27,000 turbo for the 992 front end loader (when Gold was $290 per Troy ounce)

Will my “golden years” produce a similar: Gotta buy another $27,000 lithium battery pack for the Tesla Power Wall? (when Gold is $2900 per Troy ounce)

This is not the place for political posts. tsk This post was not an endorsement of EVs or anything like that.

I just thought the guy proved that he knows his $hit.

Isn't it an interesting application in and of itself? I thought so.

Hot Rod Magazine (I think) did a tech story on F1 Motor Generator Units. If I remember correctly, the cold side (induction) was located at the front of the engine and there was a shaft that went through the valley area and connected to the hot side at the rear of the engine. Also mounted to the shaft was a motor/generator. When you didn't need more boost, the motor/generator went into generator mode and charged the battery. The Generator could also act like a JakeBrake and slow the car down. And the turbo was oversize ... to eliminate turbo lag, the ECU sent energy to the motor/generator to act like a motor and spin up the turbo. I read that article several times just to try to get a grasp on all the technology.
