McCandless car info

Just a quick question -

I have a results sheet that attributes Herb McCandless with winning SS/D at the 69 Nationals.

I know it was a Dodge..but I can’t figure what Dodge would have run SS/D - the Hemi Darts ran SS/B, the O1 cars SS/C, the O23 cars ran SS/E (they dropped two classes from 68)

Anyone know what car he raced at the 69 Nats?

In 69 - 64 Dodge/Plymouth steel front end, hood scoop, race Hemi could run SS/D and DA.

May be other combo’s.

Are you talking about the 1964 410 HP single four barrel Race hemi for NASCAR racing in NHRA SS and or stock classes?

No - talking about SS/D class at the 69 Indy Nats, which he won.

Same car with aluminum and race hemi ran in C.

I helped work on the above car after it was bought by Ken Lau and he ran it in SS/EA with a steel nose and he also ran it in SS/DA with the lightweight nose. The engine was a 426 Max Wedge in either class!

It was a steel nose '64 Dodge 440 Sedan for sure. Herb and Vaughn Currie put it together. Dark blue I believe. There are some b&w photos of it in the Petersen archives. It's the only one that is still "missing" from my research of the steel cars that were put together that year.
