Mopar Performance says to use oil with zinc in it to protect their camshafts (purple shaft), but most oils today don't have zinc. Is there a zinc additive available anywhere, and just how important is this? Thanks!

Very important on initial startup to break in a cam.
I use comp cam additive part# 159.
And also if you want to keep a little zinc in your oil.The STP additive is 75% Zinc.

I run a MP cam and I use Bradd Penn break in oil with a bottle of GM EOS, and have never had any problems with cam wear.Actually I put the EOS in with every oil change You should be able to get the EOS at any GM dealership.

Don't know if it has zinc...but I got a bottle of Rislone. Where would it say on the bottle or would it? It claims to be for performace applications, protects engine parts and stablizes oil....it's blue and realllly thick. Kind of like old school STP oil treatment.

Look up ZDDPlus. Its a relatively newcomer to the scene develeped specifically for the reduced ZN oils of today. The ppm in the little 4 oz bottle is 71,000.......yep 71,000. That boosts the level WAY up in a 5-6 quart fill (do the math).
There ARE safe oil choices too, some are synthetic--redline, amsoil, royal purple, some not like Brad Penn, and diesel oils like Delo and Rotella

So if one adds a bottle or can of STP to a new oil change...say in a 383 or 400, what will the zinc count be? From what I've read above, 1200 should be the minimum. Will STP do that?

Use a can of EOS from a gm dealer for break in if you can find it, my GM dealer said they haven't handled it in years.

Bought a plastic bottle of STP today (it's no longer in the cardboard cans). It still says on it that one of the main ingrediants is zinc. Wonder if the amount has been reduced?
