Zinc in oil?

Zinc in oil? - 04/16/09 06:08 PM

Mopar Performance says to use oil with zinc in it to protect their camshafts (purple shaft), but most oils today don't have zinc. Is there a zinc additive available anywhere, and just how important is this? Thanks!

Very important on initial startup to break in a cam.

I use comp cam additive part# 159.

And also if you want to keep a little zinc in your oil.The STP additive is 75% Zinc.

I run a MP cam and I use Bradd Penn break in oil with a bottle of GM EOS, and have never had any problems with cam wear.Actually I put the EOS in with every oil change You should be able to get the EOS at any GM dealership.

Don't know if it has zinc...but I got a bottle of Rislone. Where would it say on the bottle or would it? It claims to be for performace applications, protects engine parts and stablizes oil....it's blue and realllly thick. Kind of like old school STP oil treatment.

don't know what any of this means but it's form the Rislone web page.

Good luck finding EOS anymore. Here in the Seattle area I was told by the dealership parts guys that it is discontinued. He showed me a list of dealerships for 100 miles and the meager quantity of EOS each one had left in stock.

Re: Zinc in oil? - 04/17/09 12:32 AM

Well, since I started this topic, I've done a bit of research on zinc in oil. here are a few websites with good info...

www.aera.org/eptb/TB2333R.pdf
http://www.automachperf.com/breakin.html
http://www.powerperformancenews.com/forum/new-tech-bulletin-flat-tappet-camshaft-10.html

Seems that zinc is very important in breakin and regular running for flat tappet cams. I've heard a lot of additive names here but not which ones contain zinc. Who can enlighten me? Thanks!

Look up ZDDPlus. Its a relatively newcomer to the scene develeped specifically for the reduced ZN oils of today. The ppm in the little 4 oz bottle is 71,000.......yep 71,000. That boosts the level WAY up in a 5-6 quart fill (do the math).

There ARE safe oil choices too, some are synthetic--redline, amsoil, royal purple, some not like Brad Penn, and diesel oils like Delo and Rotella

“Motor oils are carefully balance by the formulator/manufacturer and tested to verify compliance with appropriate specifications. Adding aftermarket additives to these oils may upset this balance and the results may be unpredictable. If you trust the technology of the manufacturer, then it would be prudent to leave his formulation alone.” – Tom Schaefer, retired vice president of sales and marketing for Hatco Corporation.

An unpredictable behavior of a motor oil with an aftermarket oil additive could lead to foaming tendencies as shown in this LINK

Or the red bottle which has a bunch of zinc but is thinner than the blue bottle stuff.

Hatco Corporation, is known for its advanced synthetic lubricants for aviation, refrigeration, industrial and automotive. Many oil companies purchase base oils from Hatco. In fact, the motor oil that’s in your car right now may have been influenced by Hatco in some way or another.

Re: Zinc in oil? - 04/18/09 04:29 AM

So if one adds a bottle or can of STP to a new oil change...say in a 383 or 400, what will the zinc count be? From what I've read above, 1200 should be the minimum. Will STP do that?

Use a can of EOS from a gm dealer for break in if you can find it, my GM dealer said they haven't handled it in years.

Bought a plastic bottle of STP today (it's no longer in the cardboard cans). It still says on it that one of the main ingrediants is zinc. Wonder if the amount has been reduced?
