I have a pump gas 9.2:1 small block stroker, 426, stout hyd cam, Scat forged crank, Carillo Rods, Diamond Pistons, etc.).

It's already dyno'd and broken in and I'm prepparing to dump the oil and filter and replace it all. Any reccomendations?

Re: What's your favorite engine oil? - 04/16/09 04:26 AM

theres something in Valvoline oil that causes some people to get a rash. i was using valvoline at one stage & whilst retorquing the heads & refitting the rocker gear my buddy that was helping came out with a red rash on his hands & wrists. we changed to penzoil & all was ok but i later refilled with Valvoline & my buddy's rash came back & he refused to work on my motor. Valvoline oil is fine as far as i'm concerned just we use penzoil for the sake of my crew member.

I use regular old school type Valvoline 5W 20wt in my street cars. I'm now using Pennzoil 25W 50WT racing oil in my all out race motors Try rubbibg some of that pennsoil racing oil on your fingers and rub them together, there is some good stuff in that oil now

Put 20-50 Brad Penn back in with HP Wix filter.
It was possibly broken in with Brad Penn 30

I have always used Valvoline in everything. I used Synpower in my last car and the standard oil in my daily driver. No problems with it + it's readily available. You can't find the Valvoline race oils, or any other race oil for that matter, very easily.

Brad Penn here. Price on it here just went thru the roof. Last case I bought was 40 bucks. Now 60 bucks. Heck of a time to increase oil capacity on the cuda.LOL

Just a test for you considering switching to BP. Wash some of your internal engine parts with your current oil off in a parts washer and do the same with BP. The stuff really hangs on. Not very scientific, but sure makes you feel better when you have trouble breaking it down with solvents. Beep

Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D-4172) = Metal to metal contact, 132 pounds of pressure, 302 degrees Fahrenheit, 1800rpm, 1 hour duration.

Some believe the test doesn’t represent real world engine operation, while others consider it somewhat conducive to flat-tappet cam operation. It’s not THE test, but it’s A test to look at when considering motor oils. The Four-Ball Wear Test is an approved test by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

I figured hemi471 would have chimed in by now. He likes Amsoil Dominator 10W-30 in his 528 Hemi.

Caterpillar HD diesel oil here, about $55 for five gallons the last time I bought it.

I used Valvoline VR1 10W30 for break-in then switched to Amsoil. When the new Dominator oil came out thats what I use. Again 10W30. Im not a fan of thick oil. The Dominator Racing oil is a high zinc formula ( I have a flat tappet cam) So far I am very pleased with Amsoil!

I have been using Bradd-Peen for years now. I currently use the 10w30 race oil with a WIX filter in both my cars. One an 11.0 Roadrunner and the other an 8.80 dragster.

Use their break in oil too. (Still add the Comp lube to it).

Yea,I'm almost getting the feeling that "Oil is Oil" if your engine is setup correctly, seems like there's cult followings for a few brands but not allot of scientific data to promote one over the other

Oil is Oil...

API Motor oil categories:

Group II – Refined from crude oil
Group III – Highly refined from crude oil (considered by many as Fully Synthetic)
Group IV- Polyalphaolefins or PAOs (considered by many as 100% Synthetic)
Group V- Esters (used as additives in all the above)

Motor oils are not created equal.

Oh I understand that, but at the end of the day does one (insert specific oil per application such as automotive racing quality oil here) really protect your engine (measurably) better than the other? That's what I'm not really seeing here.
Posted By: ahy

Re: What's your favorite engine oil? - 04/18/09 12:52 AM

There is one common theme though... flat tappet owners have a strategy to get more zinc or equivalent than offered in regular car oil.

Whether its diesel oil, "classic car" oil, racing oil or one of the additives it seems all have an approach to get extra protection.

Well some of the benefits of top tier synthetic motor oils may not be fully realized until utilized in endurance type racing.

It just depends on what you’re trying to achieve with your specific application.

For example, I found this post in another automotive forum that might be pertinent to this topic:

Quote:

“I work on an off-road race truck and we run oil temp gauges and found the following: During a fifteen minute race our oil temps would get up to 300+ if using any non synthetic oils. Mobil 1 dropped the oil temps by about twenty degrees to 280 and switching to Amsoil we dropped it to about 250-260 .......this is not representative of everyday usage but keep in mind that the water temp stays always in between 180-200 at all times no matter which oil.....so all in all it is kind of an accepted opinion that Mobil 1 is the cheapest and least effective of the synthetics but all of the higher end oils.......Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc. work better under extreme conditions. I guess it all depends on what your uses are. I just have my own opinions formed because of the info stated above.”

BTW, how are things in SpoCompton I used to live in Spokane.

Wow, I was surprised to see R/P that far back on the graph. I have used all kinds of oils over the years. When I tear down, all the bearing and other contact surfaces have always looked way better using R/P. I have never used the really high priced oils because I felt there was no need to due to the facts that I held in my hand looking at. I may give a few of the other oils a try to see if the motor likes them a little better, (engine noise and performance). I do trust R/P at the end of the day tho.

Re: What's your favorite engine oil? - 04/18/09 05:13 PM

FWIW (not much, I'm sure ), I have done a lot of my own research into what sort of oil & additive package is a good match for my Challenger's usage. I've ruled out a number of name brand oils for different reasons (more than I can go into here) and will be giving Amsoil's Series 2000 20w50 a try. It's neither the cheapest nor the most expensive, but it's what I'm looking for from the standpoint of viscosity ratings, TBN level, anti-wear additives, etc.

These are the times when I really miss my Grandpa He was a head distributor for Kendall Oil for 30 years and I remember as a kid him always sending samples out to the labs for testing of wear and viscosity break downs. Too bad I was so young then and he died before I would find the need to learn this kind of stuff for my everyday uses. I use Royal Purple in my Dart and Kendall in my street car. I would use the Kendall in my Dart if I could find the racing stuff instead of the plain 10w30/10w40.

Charts and graphs are great data to look at, but at the end of the day nothing beats an engine tear down or a good Used Oil Analysis report.

This is from the 'Royal Purple' link:

Quote:

Seems like if that is the case, it is real hard to say that one oil is much better than another.......

Re: What's your favorite engine oil? - 04/19/09 04:41 PM

About 10 to 12 years ago, I helped out on a s/s team. We would go to the dyno and run it all day trying all kinds of dif things. At that time, the royal purple DID make a little more than the other oils that we had to test with. That has been a long time ago and I am sure that alot of other oil mfg have caught up on what was going on and may have even made a little better product. I really don't chase oil tec and really don't know for sure. I tried some in my diesel engine when I was making long runs (750 miles one way) to our hunting ranch. I did not see any mpg increase. I know my little stroker motor makes less valvetrain noise with the r/p.

Yea, after all the finger pointing was over in that "article" (sure seems like a "competitor" paid for that one?) that one paragraph pretty much summed it up for me as well, there is no clear winner, only "opinions".
