Anybody ever say."I am going as fast as i want to" - 04/15/09 08:29 PM

I think in my old age i have reached that point.
For two reasons
1. Walletary concerns
2.High 9's is fast enough to where i have as much fun as i need to.

Anybody else going as fast as they want to???

Re: Anybody ever say."I am going as fast as i want to" - 04/15/09 08:33 PM

Sure, I have a street car that I can drive to the track and run high 11's in. If I go much faster I need a bar and I don't want to put one in. If I can drive to the track with cast iron exhaust manifolds (quiet) and run high 11's then I'm happy. I sometimes pass cars on trailers that don't run that fast and I'm glad I don't have that investment into a truck and trailer just to run upper 11's.

once you have been fast it really doesn't matter. I had as much fun footbraking as I did running 7s at 175+.

My car ran 10 teens beforeI broke it and this engine should run 10.0's which is fine for me. I don't want the hassles of going 9's.

Kinda where i am at. If my car ran 10 flat when it was 200 degrees out, and 10 flat when its 50 out, i would be more than happy.

I dont like having to buy a bunch of extra stuff to run 9.80's and 90's at NHRA tracks, as i currently need to.

I cant feel the 1/10 or two in the seat of the pants, so running in the 9's doesnt have as much allure to me as it once did.

I think 10.0 is fast enough for this old guy , but a 9.99 slip would be nice to have . I tryed for 2 years to get a 9.99 slip but it was not there the 10.08 was easy so I thaught . Looks like the next owner will have to get the 9.99

Re: Anybody ever say."I am going as fast as i want to" - 04/15/09 09:03 PM

It is kinda ironic for me as I was quite content with my 8.2x leadsled running 9.90 in SG trim or 5.2x in our quick32 bracket race.
The very rule that allowed me to enter and win Top Sportsman at the IRR Sports Nationals is the same rule that demands you run 7.60 or quicker at Nitro Jam and National events...
So I was somewhat forced (no one held a gun to my head!) but this could certainly be a once in a lifetime opportunity, to buy a lightweight roller so I can race for an IHRA World Championship.

Going fast is fun but turning on win lights is MUCH more exilerating for me. I covered the second half of the 1/4mile 2 weeks ago in 2.7 seconds! And I was only qualified 19 out of 22!That is gettin' it on!!

Re: Anybody ever say."I am going as fast as i want to" - 04/15/09 09:06 PM

Yep,,,10.00 flat is good for me as that put's me right where I want to be with an occational 9.90's when I feel the need to, I would rather have the ability to run 9.90/.80's then back it down to run 10flat for the reason of all the added money that a fellow has to spend to be able to run quicker than 10.00 on a consistant basis.

Re: Anybody ever say."I am going as fast as i want to" - 04/15/09 09:08 PM

Right now I run 9.90;s and my thoughts are to be able to get my car into the 9.40's in another year or so and then evaluate it once I get it there (and DoubleD will make sure it gets there ). I always thought I would like to run 8.90's and stop there but maybe I'll be happy at the 9.40's but I doubt it I guess DoubleD's work will not be done at 9.40's

Even at 12.02 I'm happy doing that. I have 2 kids to send to college and me to send to retirement. At one time I thought 12.20 was all I thought the factory headed smallblock could do. Now should be capable of 11.8's with decent weather. I was thinking of running the 12.0 index. ( index classes seem to be on the comeback.)

Afford? I'd like to put the cuda back together so it gets a 9.XX slip and back it down to avoid the huge bump in cost.

Re: Anybody ever say."I am going as fast as i want to" - 04/15/09 10:59 PM

There are several barriers that it takes a jump in expense/program to cross. The 11.49 is one, then 10.99 the next, then 9.99, and so on (NHRA tracks).

The question to ask yourself, aside from whether you can afford the next level, is what class do you want to be in? A 10 or 11-second car is relatively easy to build, and can run Super Pro, Pro, and/or Box or No-Box in bracket racing.

In my case, it does not make sense to change the heads, cam and carb to run 9.50's, as the 10.20's I run now will find me in the same classes.

With my truck in it's current state, it's getting close.
Last summer I ran it up to 7000 rpm in high gear on my semi-private test track.(440 street, really!) The air got under the front end and it instantly swapped lanes on me, I'm guessing somewhere in the neighborhood of 125-130 mph when it happened. I don't think I needed my 5 point harness, I was puckered down to the seat pretty hard. Dave

I put my old car together (again) about 3 years ago with the hope of 11.70s or so. I never thought of the street car going any faster. The first pass was a 11.40 and it got faster from there. 11.17 and now im looking for 10s. So in a word no, not there yet.

No i'm not fast enough yet .
this should be the motor that gets me into that 3 digit number .
back in 70s 14s 13s 12.99 yes that was the magic number .
Then in the 80s 12s got into mid 11s
90s was low 11s
2000 hit that 10.999
then 2005 got crazy 10.50s
last year 10.20s
2009 should be 9s
why 32 years racing a feather in my cap .
I'm 50 and still playing hopefully racing has no age.

Re: Anybody ever say."I am going as fast as i want to" - 04/16/09 01:00 AM

I don't want to go to the expense of taking the chassis cert from 8.50 to 7.50, so I'd like to hit it with a small shot of spray and run right at my chassis limits. Then I'm done. I'm pretty sure a small Monty shot should get me yelled at for going under the cert

If I keep the car much longer I'll slow it down a little with a pump gas motor and turn up the spray. Then I can drive it more on the street and still go as fast at the track.

I like the E.T. and speed I have been 9.53@ 138, but dad keeps telling me that hitting 150 is a neat experience and I'd like to feel that in his car sometime. I'd really like to feel the acceleration of a .990 60' like a pro stocker, but if running mid 6's, 7's or 8's never happen for me, there are still very few people who have ever gotten to experience the thrill of the speeds we have achieved at the track.

Re: Anybody ever say."I am going as fast as i want to" - 04/16/09 04:31 AM

This is a discussion my brothers and I have been kicking around a great deal lately. With the tightening economy, and NHRA's raising of all the fees necessary to maintain sub 10.00 cars, I'm really wishing I had rebuilt my 10.00 @ 133 combo, rather than stepping up to a bigger engine!!
The nice thing about my old combo was that I could fly over the 9.99 radar, but could hit the bottle and dip in the 8's when the desire hit, and truthfully, only about once a year was enough to satisfy the go-fast demon!

I'll be the first to admit that I want to go faster than my 8.92-149 best...I'm just not sure It's worth the money I'm spending to get there!!
The plan right now is to assemble the 514 Indy-1 combo, strut the Challenger, and build new headers. I'm 44 years old, and this is the last time I'm going to spend money for more performance...I'm figuring 9.0's or so on motor, some mid to low 8's on squeeze. The thing is, the faster you get, the more it seems like work, and I'm not talking about between round maintenance, I'm talking about ending up with a car that becomes dependant on track conditions, a handfull on marginal tracks..that's ok if you're just going for a timeslip, but if you're bracket or index racing, it's no fun.

Eventually the Challenger will leave, and I'll be happy with the smallblock 62 Valiant, it's running 10.90's now, but if I can get it to mid 10's with all the street equipment on, and then a little system for kicks, I'll be perfectly content.

Re: Anybody ever say."I am going as fast as i want to" - 04/16/09 01:14 PM

I did and tried to slow my car down over the winter. I got the car to run 9.45 at 144mph, it felt great and safe but I think that is pushing it for a heavy back-half car. I also let my wife drive it a lot so that's in the back if my mind. So I traded a fully ported set of heads for some out of the box head and went from a roller cam to a flat tappet trying to slow it down to 9.90s in good weather and 10.0s all year round. But it only slowed it down about 3 tenths, it's been 9.78 at 139mph so far.

But that was for my car. This year I'm driving a 7.90 dragster for a guy so it wasn't that I didn't want to go faster I just felts I was running to fast for my car.

This weekend I'll be putting the motor into my wife's car and I'm a little concerned that it will be too fast. 318 stroker, 390cid, Edelbrock and the car doesn't have a roll bar so I'm hoping it will run 12.00 but I have a feeling it will run 11.50s or better.

But it's cheaper and easier to slow them down.

How fast one can go is controlled by many factors. [list
  • affordability
  • car capability
  • Driver capability
  • and the most important the effects racing has on you and others in your family. These are the things we discuss with our races before we envolve them in our race programs.I have seen many people dive head on into a race program and not consider how it effects their family and watched things go bad finanically, emotionally and even physically.Have a plan and consider the actions and results and make sure they are within your means and are considerate of those close to you.

On my budget I am close. I dont worry about being the fastest as I dont have the money for that. I have what I want in my 63 as it is a street/strip car. I would like to build another eng that would put it in the 10's on pump gas and still be a driver street car. That will be fast enough for me. Ron

Perhaps it's my age, or my station in life...but I am totally satisfied with the way it runs, high tens, mid tens on a good day. I have no desire to run quicker.

It's an antique car, with antique technology. I am comfortable in it (I've owned and driven it for forty years), the pieces in the motor are old school, I know the stuff. It's consistent, doesn't require much maintenence, and is fun to drive. More importantly, it gives me time to race with my sons and my old pals like BG who I've known since the stone age.

A few years ago Kyle had this idea that he would put a big stroker in, all the fancy stuff.....I shot it down because I wasn't ready to quit myself. He got so mad at me he went out and bought his own cars, which are much faster and quicker. Bully for him.

So, I'm totally satisfied. Life is good.

If I would have put the flying toilet alcohol injection on a smaller motor, I wouldn't have needed the extra cubic inches to run 9's. Now I am near the bottom of my class (limited to 9.00 in footbrake).

BG makes a good point. I didn't register for points last year. The year before I was dedicated to racing, went to the team bracket finals for my local track, etc. etc. Keep it fun.

The Charger has seen 9.30's and the Dart 9.60's (with a lot more potential if I built the rest of the engine to match up with the 514) and I'm good with those #'s. Bracket racing is what I do and going faster than where I'm at isn't going to do anything for me. Just more money, anyways.
