69 B-Body mini-tub/inboard springs with 3" tailpipes pics - 02/22/22 06:12 PM

Anyone have any pictures of a 69 B-body with a mini-tub, leaf springs moved inboard with full length 3" tailpipes? If so, please share.

Looking to see fitment and clearance to the leaf spring shackles.

Thanks in advance!

I bought and used the Summit 3.0 inch exhaust pipe kit for 1966 to 1971 B bodies in my 1966 Dodge Coronet, they worked well after massaging the passenger side of the gas tank a little hammer up

Big difference between a 66/7 gas tank and a 68-70

Going to be a pretty tight squeeze if you have a stock gas tank. A narrowed gas tank/something skinnier from another vehicle would help a bunch.

Most mini tubbbed cars I've seen either have no tailpipes, or they have a fuel cell in the trunk, or both.

Vehicle is equipped with a fuel cell, so fuel tank clearance is not an issue.

It can be done but you need a pro doing the work.

Then why are you even asking this question?!?! Run the pipes wherever the hell you want

I was thinking from the OP that with the stock tank, you'd have to run tailpipes outboard of the rear frame rails, crossing over in an area where they'd clear the springs.
I believe Cab did that on a Duster; smaller car, but similar architecture.
But since we now know there's no OEM tank, just run the pipes inboard of the rear rails and secure them by brackets coming off the rails.
A bit narrower than OEM spacing, but solves the problem.

Stanton,

I'm asking the question because the leaf springs have been moved inboard and the center of the shackle is now parallel with the factory exhaust hanger mounting point. The shackle now partially extends into or very near the stock tailpipe location, hence the reason I asked for pictures.

I don't want to run the pipes wherever the HELL I want, I want to use the stock location if possible for a clean stock look with 68-70 exhaust tips in the factory location! If this cant be done, I will stick to my current exhaust dumping before the rear axle.

It can be done, but it takes some skill. You need to have a craftsman build the rear pipes for you, you won't get them in a kit and you won't get them from Midas. You need to have a street rod type of guy build them.

Dat be true up
The later B body are a lot easier to work on the exhaust system with their gas tanks: up: I had to bend up the outboard gas tank flanges and maneuver the pipes to the clear the front edges of the gas tank above the Dana 60 rear end that I moved forward three inches devil

Okay,

The metal shackle itself is fine, but the rubber bushings in both the spring and the shackle probably won't be too happy with
the heat of an exhaust pipe (assuming this will be driven enough to get the exhaust hot: bushing damage).

Two ideas I'd consider, or maybe a combination of them:

-A slider instead of a shackle, which is more compact/takes up less real estate, and does not contain
any rubber, eliminating the concern of melting damage by having the tailpipe in close proximity.

-move the tailpipes inboard a small amount, just enough. Maybe 1 and 1/2 to 2 inches.
Not enough to be very noticeable as far as overall visual appearance.
Slightly longer versions of the factory style tip hanger as attached could be fabricated pretty easily to help this along.

This is easily possible especially with the stock gas tank gone, and I'm sure it's been done.

Good luck.

Thank you for the picture and for those who have provided insight and ideas on this topic!

I think that I may give it a go wrench

The Road Runner ended up with a full 3 inch exhaust all the way out the back with factory looking tips. It has a full size EFI gas tank and the springs are moved under the frame. The springs are Calvert mono-leafs so they are a little thinner than stock but just as wide. The job came out looking perfect but it took time and cost money.

It is a friend's car. He brought it over last winter for some help putting it together after it was painted. I helped him get it running and driving and then he took it home and finished up the glass and interior work. It has a 700 hp 505 inch big block with Holley Sniper EFI. It was a four speed car but the engine was too radical for a manual trans so he had a 727 built and installed.

Similar vibe to my Bee clone.

Pics of the tips and the routing aren't the best but if I recall this is a 3" TTI kit.
