Found the culprit stranding me Sunday - 05/04/21 08:50 PM

Couldnt make the semis Sunday. Had won the previous rd. But now had no forward gears. Time to upgrade that stock 1965 planetary.

That explains it...
Just be sure and get the planetary with the splines that match the year of your shaft.
Spline pressure angles were:

'62 to '75: 45º
'76 to '93: 37.5º
'94 and later: 30º

The pressure angle is half the included angle (90°, 75°, 60°).

Looks familiar. Had that happen to me at MATS many years ago. Took out the transmission as well as the rear end. That was the only year that I did NOT remove the transmission and have it rebuilt. First car to be taken off the track on a rollback.

When I was getting the trans built for my 493 I took the builder a truck trans for a core and asked him if he thought it would have 4 pin planets in it and he said it didn't matter.

He said when him and his partner were running their AA/SS car, they took out 2 of the 4 pinions and never had a pinion failure. They all did what yours did.

How many passes was on that set? Making too much power now....

Re: Found the culpritbeing straded - 05/05/21 02:37 AM

I caught it one time before on inspection. Just about stripped. Probably about 350 passes I'd have to look. And yes this is the 1st year I haven't pulled it down to inspect, 18 passes into the season. Itll be ready for my next race on 2 weeks. The pan got caved in about 1/4" from the big wheelie. I'll pull it and bump it out. Funny the bottom of the diaper is fine.

Blame it on the new Holley's power gain. Lol

No, the cave in is the oil pan. Funny thing it didn't rip the diaper up.

Wow, glad it's a relatively easy fix! I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has. My trans guy recommended a steel planetary setup for me once I surpassed the 650 hp or so range.
Good luck w/ it Doug...looking forward to seeing how those new carbs work out for you.

Awww.. it's not that bad. Can't you just braze it back on to the output shaft and call it good?

I had mine fail that way twice. The second failure i found the dana 60 had slipped on the axle tubes. Funny, those aluminum parts didn't appreciate a 30 degree pinion angle😁

Mine did last year. I had a guy near me who builds tarps sew it back up. I got rid of the center sump hanging down thing and put the Milodon flat bottom pan on mine the other week .Much more stable oil pressure. I hit the pan now and I am looking for a new car lol.

I know but sooner or later they get expensive, and if you are shoe polish racing they cost you win lights...
