Hasting rings, check the fit!

Hasting rings, check the fit! - 01/03/21 08:34 PM

I putting a 351W Ford pump gas street motor together for my 1940 ford Tudor street rod, I ordered a set of pistons from Race Tec, Auto Tec along with a set of 1/16,1/16,3/16 standard tension oil rings. It came with a set of Hasting rings, I'm use to using Total Seal or some other brands like Seal Power or Speed Pro file to fit.
These Hasting have a lot of more ring overlap in the bores before filing and the oil ring rails seem to be a lot softer than the other brands I've used in the past shock
On my set, 4.030 1/16,1/16, 3/16 standard tension oil rings I could not fit the rings into the bores with out making the ends overlap each other, I see right at .130 + over lap on the 2nd rings so far, I had to file the oil ring rails a bunch to get their recommended .015+ end gap and ended up with .050 + on a lot of them shruggy
I'm going to start filing the top rings later this afternoon after finishing fitting the 2nd rings on the passenger side of the motor today wrench
My concerns are for all of you that end up using these rings to be very careful when filing them on a electric ring filer like the Pro Form filer I use, it ground through the oil ring rails ends in a big hurry shock
I like to see more gap then the minimum by .002 to ,004 depending on the intended use of the motor, I do widen the 2nd ring by .003 to .006 more than the top ring gap also up
IHTHs luck

👍

And Total Seal's 1/16,1/16, 3/16 moly, cast, 3 piece oil ring sets are re-boxed Hastings rings, Total Seal does not make any of their Moly rings.

The ring wont contact the bore walls correctly if they weren't made for the right bore, sure you can file them for end clearance, but the tension and bore contact wont be uniform. They should be manufactured for a specific bore +/- maybe .010 max. I heard somewhere that Hastings makes most rings no mater what the box name.

I took the rings out of the Hasting box and used it to help warm the shop up in the wood stove before seeing how they fit into the bores realcrazy That won't happen again whistling
I didn't order the file to fit rings with these pistons due to it being my own pump N/A street car and normally seeing most stock ring pack to fit in a new bore fairly well for me on the street.
I used a bright 110 V light bulb under the rings down below the cylinder walls in the crankcase to see if they are sealing up against the cylinder walls and they look good so far luck
I remember seeing Hasting rings adds year ago in a lot of the old car magazines, not so recently in the last twenty years shruggy

Doing some rough math I bet you got 4.070 file fits. Opening up bore by 1 thou. has has to be multiplied by pi to get the gap change. 4.07-4.03 =.04 x 3.14= .1256 overlap in a 4.03 bore which would have put the gap at .0044 in a 4.070 bore with those rings. Perfect for file fitting. By putting a too large ring in the bore and filling excessively to get the gap still loads the ring in the bore much harder. I would fish scale the drag and see what you come up with. Might be ok.
