DRAG WEEK RAD/COOLING PKG

DRAG WEEK RAD/COOLING PKG - 07/13/20 06:30 PM

Prepping my 360 stroker(550HP/575TQ) for Drag week. At the track, I got away with the Moroso belt driven motor/pump. This flows about 25gpm. At the track, the hood is off and the cooling is easier. Any working combos out there? THX

HEMI Joel uses a Meziere pump, on his 392 HEMI, as do many others. We had no issues running it in 2018. Stuff the biggest aluminum radiator you can fit in the car as well. Never know when the route will send you through rush hour traffic.

My system is adequate but not ideal. My radiator core is 22x19 and I run dual electric fans from an Intrepid. I run a Meziere 35GPM pump. Other than chicago gridlock in 2015 I have never had to pull over on drag week due to overheating but there has been plenty of close calls of running 210-215 on the highway with lots o traffic. My car will gain 5-10* if you get anywhere near truck traffic on the highway.

Cooling upgrades is on my list for every drag week but I usually don't get it done lol. The Meziere pump on a small block presents some clearance challenges with electric fans.

My car had one of the moroso pumps with the built in motor. It flows alot. I also have a wizard radiator and a hhr electric fan. The car got hot about 25 miles away from the 1st track last year. The hood came off it helpped but was still hot.

I couldn't be happier with the cooling system in my hot rod. It's a 468-in, 13 to 1 Hemi, and a drag week 2018 we were in South Carolina and Georgia. It must have been about a hundred degrees in the Sun, and sitting in traffic for extended periods the highest it ever got was about 185. I think that the key is to have lots of radiator, lots of water flow, and lots of air flow. The car has a big aluminum radiator, 55 GPM messier pump, and a single dorman electric fan that was made for a Chevy HHR that I got for about 50 bucks at RockAuto. I ripped the shroud off of it and run it with no shroud.
Its got the radiator mounted water pump and I built a reverse cooling system by running a pair of - 12 lines from the outlet of the pump into the heads. Then from the block, a pair of - 20 lines into the top of the radiator.

So my best bet is to fab a custom radiator support for a larger radiator? More surface cooling area and more fluid to cool. With an early "A" radiator, I'm 3" smaller then the 67-69 Darts. Thicker core is not an option with little clearance from the present aluminum rad and Moroso pump that I have.

To pick up a little room I did a little welding on on the timing cover around the water holes. Then milled off the pump recess on the cover to make it flat and a back plate is not needed for the Meziere pump. I also welded up the fuel pump hole at the same time. This mod gave me about 3/4" more room

I never had cooling problems, ever, until I built a 605 Hemi with a Mega block....I was using a BeCool 31x19 with 1" double row tubes p#62087 in combination with a Mezeire 35gph water pump and a set of flex-a-lite dual 12" fans w/2500cfm...That worked great for many years until this big iron monster.....

I switched out the fans to BeCool dual 13" 10 blade fans for 3560cfm and now swapped the 35gph water pump for a 55gph ater pump.....We will see. When I kicked the fans on the first time, they blew both fuses and I had to then upgrade my 100 amp alternator to a 140 amp to get any real voltage at idle....Its been a struggle with the hood on to stay cool...typically gets to 215-217ish....No likey....

Maiden voyage tomorrow maybe....

On my race car, I run a mechanical setup, and I switched from a stock water pump to one of those FlowKooler deals, that dropped over -10 out of the car temp and it never sees above 195 on the hottest days round robin...

Yes I have considered doing that as well, it just keeps getting pushed down the list haha.
