Carter Competition Thermoquad Rebuild?

Carter Competition Thermoquad Rebuild? - 12/30/19 02:26 PM

I've got two of these things...Does anyone know what kit you need to rebuild/refresh one? I know they're quite a bit different than a standard TQ, just not sure if you need a special kit for them or not. Most of the information I read online seems to be hearsay, as the two I have contradict what is being said (Size/Design).

One I have is in pieces, and the other is complete. I believe they're both 4846's, but the boosters are different in them, one has the "dual" booster, while the other has just a regular style booster for what it's worth...

Unfortunately I don’t think any of them were ever stamped. That had the gold aluminum tag under a screw on the drivers side rear, and tags can get swapped around. The 4846 and the 4846s should have the double booster in the top. It should also have a noticeable Venturi in the main body primaries. The 1000 cfm 4847 and 4847s will have the single booster and the primaries will be a straight shot. The only kit that I know of made just for the competition series was the Carter 5153x. But, the gaskets even in an unopened kit would be junk by now, as they haven’t been made in years. You may have to get creative on the main body gaskets. The rest of the parts should interchange with other kits. Also bear in mind that the early ones had press in jets and the later were screw in.

Correct, they were not stamped. One has the gold tag marked 4846 (Can't remember at the moment if it was S or SA), the other has no tag. I was wondering if the one with the single straight boosters was a 1000 cfm, as I did read you could convert an 850 to a 1000 by removing the dual booster? Not sure how true that is. The single booster carb is the one that's apart, it is unfortunately missing some pieces. Thank you for the info though, you confirmed what I suspected on the kits. Luckily the main body gaskets on both are in good enough condition that I can make a copy.

That’s right s and sa on the competition series. In order to pick up the 150 cfm not only did they cut out the double booster, they also cut out the Venturi in the main body.

I believe the competition carb took the same gaskets as the 71 TQuad. Those are available from several sources.

4846SA here, stamped in the lower driver side corner, no tag.

Not sure regarding the original history of the carb though, so quite possible the previous owner stamped?
