cam swap for street/resto 416 sb - 11/07/19 05:26 PM

I have a 340 stroker (416) here going into a 71 cuda restoration car,car is 4 speed with 355 gears and will be running stock manifolds and OE exhaust. For some unknown reason former owner has a solid tappet cam in this engine so I have to pull that out and install a hydraulic camshaft.
I have 2 comp hyd flat tapppets here I can use:

or
https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/cca-20-224-4/overview/make/dodge

This car will only be a driver/show car so I dont want it to sound like a race car but Im okay with slightly lopier than stock idle.......I'm also open to buying a new cam as well...

I'm building something very similar for a customer. Watching with enthusiasm. Was contemplating extrude honing the factory iron intake and exhaust manifolds however I've read that it doesn't yield much gain.

Of those two, I'd pick the Magnum. But there is a real love fest for the XE cams so most will recommend that one.

If not those, I'd lean toward the Crower 271. IMO it has the right ramps, the right duration, and the right LSA for what you want..

What's wrong with a solid flat tappet cam? shruggy

Why do you 'have to' pull it, is it too big for the combination? You don't say why specifically other than you prefer it not to sound like race car. You do have more cubic inches than stock...

With what you are doing, I'd get ahold of Dwayne Porter and let him spec you a cam. It will be worth the time and effort. Stuffing 416 inches out exhaust manifolds is tricky to get correct.

I just think an off the shelf cam will require you to accept too many compromises.

Its a very valuable car and the clatter of non stock, incorrect solid lifters will devalue this car,it will be close to an OE restoration, former owner was doing a hot rod resto.....

I'm building a 410 SB now... almost ready to install into the car... from everything I've learned about cam selection for a SB stroker, the two cams you indicate are very small (especially duration, as well as lift).

With what your doing I like the second one better. 242@50 I assume and more lift than the first one. I put a hydro roller 236/242@50 in my dads 410sbc. It works great. It is a stick car,but I think it has enough vacuum for auto trans with power brakes.

Do you know the compression ratio of the engine?

Sorry but your reasoning for pulling the cam makes little sense since the shortblock is stroked. Seems pointless to me to go through all that work and go backwards in performance.

If you don't care about making more power, why not pull the entire engine and rebuild it to stock stroke, '71 340 specs? Seems like that's what you're after and either of the cams you posted should work much better with less cubic inches.Proceeding that way would make more sense in the long run rather than trying to band-aid the situation with mis-matched parts.

You're halfway there already if you pull the cam. You can re-use pretty much everything except the crank and pistons.Don't know what heads and induction you have but if you have aftermarket stuff you can sell those parts off and find the correct pieces. Not trying to spend your money but if you believe the car has more value with the OE combination it would stand to reason to do the job "correctly".

Just a thought.

^ what he said. Might even consider a hydraulic roller.

10.5:1 compression. Cam is on a 110 in at 106. Very smooth running engine with plenty of street torque.
