He's running a 470, 35* timing shifts at 7000rpm 1150 alky carb. Don't know all the particulars. But gets back to the pits and its over 200*. Any ideas?

if the cooling system is good it is probably lean

Cooling system is more than enough. I can't convince him it has to be lean.

it might be jetted good for WOT, but driving back to the pits, cruise mode it could be VERY lean

Its lean or the timing is retarded.

If the exhaust smell doesn't burn your eyes at idle it is to lean shruggy
Tell him to please fatten up the idle for one run and see if it is the cure or not up
My bracket car runs on E85 with no radiator, it has two small oil coolers for the water. It is hard for me to get heat in the motor in the mornings but once it is warmed up it is harder for me to get it to cool down in a hurry whiney
Most guys that have radiators tell me there cars will cool down around 20 degrees after a 1/4 mile run driving back to the pits work If it doesn't that fatten up the idle until it does work
