Help with carb choice

Help with carb choice - 05/04/19 11:40 AM

I’ve got a customer with a nicely restored 68 Charger RT 440 auto. I helped with the car years ago. I tinkered with his carb when he first got it back from the Rod shop that finished up the car. They were not mopar guys at all. I could not get the famous “ flat spot” out of the Edelbrock #1411 carb at all. He took it to a dyno and had it tuned. They could not get it right. We had the calibration kit and still did not correct the problem. He ended up putting an 800 cfm Edelbrock #1413 and it was not much better. He did not bother to have it tuned. Fast forward to now. He brought the car out of storage and I’m replacing the gas tank, fuel fump, vapor separator, radiator, water pump, thermostat, and maybe the brake system. It ran so crappy, he did not drive it and it sat and ruined lots of parts. So, he has given up on Edelbrock carbs. I’ve installed two of the new AVS2 650 and they don’t have a flat spot, but the first one smelled like fuel after sitting for a few minutes after shutdown and was hard to start hot. Since I’m used to tuning Holley six packs, I’m thinking a Holley may be the ticket. I hate to take a chance on a used AVS, even though I’ve had good luck rebuilding most of my used carters. Is there a good Holley type 750 or so with adjustable air bleeds and electric choke that would make a street car start and run good. He’s tired of having trouble. Fuel inj is not an option.

This subject has been beat to death on here. The search function is your friend. If you are not too hung up on the Holley platform, you might consider the Street Demon.

Your best bet is to get ahold of thumprdart on here and let him build a carb. Mark Whitener can do it too. Much better than an off the shelf carb.

It's a pay now or pay later deal. A custom carb up front is more money but in the long run its pennies on the C note.

If you’re looking for a Holley style carb, I’d take a look at the QFT Street Brawlers, or Hot Rod, or SS series carbs.

Mark, I have a QuickFuel SS 650 carb that is brand new that I no longer need. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.
