clean neutral valve body ??? - 02/18/19 06:18 PM

school me on clean neutral valve bodies. how do they work ?
could a pushbutton transmission be considered a variant of this due to the way the shifter works ?
this old goat has wondered about this for several years. TIA all ! bow

Clean neutral allows a three speed to disengage the front clutch pack at the finish line while leaving the rear clutch pack applied to prevent the rear pack from going into over-speed.

A pushbutton is not a variant as pressing neutral will unload both clutch packs, and depending on the valve body, and other pieces...leave you with an expensive puzzle to re-assemble.

What could possibly happen by shifting into neutral w/ a normal VB (like a TA rev MVB) at the finish line?

I surely don't want to attempt throwing a reverse valve body into neutral at the finish line...

With a standard valve body, the direct drum will spin at over two times the speed of the engine when it is clicked into neutral at the finish line. Some say it won't affect anything, some say otherwise. I definitely wouldn't put it back into drive until I brought the RPM's down to idle if I clicked it into neutral at the stripe through. twocents

I've done it before, but only a few times years ago to kill the motor and look at plugs. Didn't have a problem, but heard it was bad so never did it again. Not to mention I need the compression braking to slow my sled down.

So there's a possibility of a drum exploding depending on what valve body you have?

Happened to me once. Probably the dumbest thing I've ever done in my race car. It shifts through 2nd then 1st before hitting neutral. Nearly flipped the car at 140+. I saved it but took out the finish line cones. All because I forgot to put gas in the car after warmup and before 1st call. It was running out of fuel, I knew exactly what was happening as I had no fuel pressure so I shut the car off and just out of shear, stupid habit I reached for neutral so I could coast back to my pit. Next thing I know there's orange blocks in my windshield and I'm coasting alright. Guy watching at the stripe said there was 2 feet of air under my right rear tire. I went down to apologize with my friends on the track crew and Dan the starter goes "[ Moparts Family Site - Keep it Friendly ] WAS THAT?" eek

Nope that's the wrong pic. That's a 518 vb.

With my Hurst 1/4 stick and a reverse MVB, pull the trigger and slam it all the way forward to go to neutral...no problems w/ 2nd or 1st gear. Definitely no locking up the tires or anything like that.

Must be differences in the VB's from different manufacturer. Mine is a Pro Trans. custom LBA, RM, alum drum, roller, billet input, blah, blah, blah, SCS shifter. I love my powerglide because of just this issue. I shut the car off at the stripe every time. Maybe my 727 did what it did because the engine was shut down first? shruggy The 727 is in my street car now and it's a blast to drive! Kind of stupid with an 8" converter but I've been driving it every day when it's not raining. I have a 10" that I want to try in it.

Dave...could be, I dunno. Mine has a Turbo Action VB in it and the motor was always running when I went to neutral.

While we are here, what does the trans do when shutting off at the stripe without a clean "N" ??

Mine always stayed in 3rd until I was off the track. I never shut the engine off at the stripe with a 727 though. Once was enough. I would imagine just leave it in high gear. I would imagine at some point it "lets go" because there is no fluid pressure. I always go to neutral before clicking the engine with the glide.

I have [censored] it off many times at the stripe.Have left in high,,have pressed the "N" button after the key off with no known consequences.
That why I asked work

Still tunin whistling
