Satin Clear

Satin Clear - 02/02/19 05:49 PM

I've got the engine removed from my 68 dart and wanted to go ahead and clear the engine bay while its all apart.

Swapping the anemic 273 with a slightly rowdy 340.

Does anyone have any experience laying clear over 50 yrs of awesomeness?

I'm curious what clear would work best and recommended mixing ratios.

Thanks Guys!

Aerosol or gun?
Personally I like gloss clear

By "mixing ratios" I assume you are talking about how much flattening agent to use. You are going for an original 'aged' look and not disturbing the original engine bay paint right?

Impossible to say without seeing what the bay looks like now (gloss level).

Buy the flattening agent separately (half pint) and do your own spray out test.

If you're preserving patina, it looks most accurate in satin or flatter finishes. That can be done adding a flattening agent to a gloss paint, or buying a satin/low-gloss finish.
30% flattening is a good ballpark. Shoot a test panel, note your mix ratio, use proper mixing cups with ratios marked.
Prep: clean & degrease fully, follow up with wax & grease remover, scuff with 600/800/red Scotchbrite for mechanical adhesion.
Take your time & be thorough on the prep & masking.

Even cleaning good theres a high risk of the paint bubbling and the new clear getting contaminated.
