727 tranny question - 03/15/09 12:46 PM

What causes fluid to blow out of the vent hole on the pump? This is a new tranny in a friends car, I not a transmission guy so has anybody got an idea whats going on? It has a TA brake in it, don't know the line pressure. This was bought online off of someone who builds transmissions, Thanks, Jesse

In transbrake applications, the direct drum is drilled for a bleedhole for faster release and ellimination of centrifical apply. Some kits say to drill in the aluminum piston, other say to drill the drum. If the drum is drilled, it can blow fluid as it swings by the vent in the pump. If this is the case, you may want to consider a rear vent conversion.

excessive heat is the first thing that comes to mind, how does the trans preform? and noticeable binding or dragging during operation? are you sure the fluid is comming from the vent? I ran into a front fluid leak issue where after a new front seal and then a front pump assy I had the convertor checked where they found a small crack in the snout..............Tom.

AS stated by turbobitt, normally when a brake is installed the vent on the pump is tapped and plugged and the vent is put in the rear of the trans case.

Thanks fellas, dad and were talking about the vent needing to be moved to the rear so sounds like we will be taking it to our tranny guy assuming the hole thing will need to come apart to put in a rear vent. Thanks for the help, Jesse

If you put the vent in the tail housing the most you woud need to remove is the front pump and rear housing.

Just keep in mind that there is a "rib" that goes down the top length of the housing. This is the oil passage for the rear bushing. Put the vent off to either side of the rib.
