My car is a pig!

My car is a pig! - 01/24/19 05:40 AM
I scaled my car today, was heavier than I thought! Challenger, It has a glass hood, glass front bumper aluminum brackets, no back seat. Does have a 10 point mild steel cage, Dana 60 and a Siamese mega block, full tank of gas. I was not in the car. But it was better front to back than I expected!

That is without you in it?
My 71 Charger is 3860 without me.
I only have a 6 point and full interior.

Any thoughts on what items are coming in heavier than than they should be?

I have no idea where the manufacturers got heir weight from but they all seem very low compared to actual weights. I almost had a stroke when I weighed my gremlin and it is going to be over 3200# with glass and no interior....

This happens quite regularly on built street/strip cars, they get heavy quick! Cage, safety equipment, heavy block, better cooling system, heavy duty trans with an added cooler, shield and gear vendors unit. Fuel system is heavier than stock, electrical system is heavier than stock, it all adds up!

Thats not bad with a cage, dana and aftermarket bb. My brothers 72 Cuda with a bb is 3650 with him in it. I bet the dana, cage and bb added 250lbs to your build.

Re: My car is a pig! - 01/24/19 12:27 PM
As I remember my street Challenger (SB 4 speed) was right around 3600 w/o driver. The factory bumpers weigh nothing. Hood helps. The cage is probably at least 120#. A Mega block weighs around 75# more than a 440 block. You can always work on it. My 64 Belvedere comes in at 3130 w/o driver, full interior (-back seat), mega block, 2 batteries, Dana, all steel exc hood.

I forgot about the gear vendor, and trans cooler, electric fans, big fuel pump etc. it all adds up. I will start looking for places to remove weight, just started reading the thread on here lots of good info there.

Re: My car is a pig! - 01/24/19 06:56 PM
My '73 Challenger w/ me on digi-scales was 3755 #s
- full OEM interior, except back seat
- 8-point rollbar
- OEM RB block
- glass T/A replica hood
- 8.75" diff
- only 1/4 tank of fuel when weighed
- driver probably 185 at the time, so car was about 3570
When it comes back out, it's going to be heavier, regardless
- Victor heads feel like 10 #s more each than Stage VIs
- swapped 8.75" for Strange S-60... 40+ #s?
- driver about 210 #s now
- and at 6 #s per gallon of fuel, an easy 70 #s for closer to a full tank
Add an est. 130 #s w/o driver and I'd expect 3700 #s for car -- assuming full tank -- and 3900+ w/ driver.
Nope, NOT light.

I did mild steel chassis on a 70' challenger, rectangle frame rails, dana 60, iron low deck and 906 iron heads. Without me in it was 2450lbs.

Re: My car is a pig! - 01/24/19 10:06 PM
My cuda was 3780 lbs w/ me (320 lbs) in it and NO fuel. Had just backed it off the chassis dyno and the fuel pump was sucking air.
This was before I added all the nitrous crap onto it.
'70 cuda, all steel except for the fiberglass hood, 10 point MS cage, manual steering and brakes, no heater box, FULL factory interior (front buckets and back seat, all door panels, etc.), all aluminum hemi, 727, Dana 60, etc.
FWIW...my all aluminum hemi weighed the same as the iron block/aluminum headed 440 it replaced.

That car must of had a bunch of really thin sheet metal on it
My current S/P (1970 Cuda) car is a all chrome moly tube chassis with coil over suspension front and rear, narrowed Dana 60 with 40 spline axles and spool with dual disc brake calipers on the rear with fibreglas doors, hood, rear deck lid and both bumpers with all Lexan windows except for the front windshield, it weighs right at 2490 Lbs. wet ready to race with out me in it using a 400 block with aluminum heads and no radiator

How is it that your car & driver combination is
hundreds of #s lighter than other B/E bodies w/ similar equipment?

I always thought E bodies were 32-3400 fully loaded. That wouldnt be too far off then since you added cage, dana and some extras.

Very selective when it comes to parts on the car. Trans case is magnesium, aluminum flywheel, fuel cell is 8 gallons, not 20, all sound deadener has been removed, no heater, Wilwood front brakes. Doesn't hurt that I weigh 165#. New car should be 3100# or less, but that car has fiberglass bumpers, fenders, and decklid, Kirkey seats, and a few other tricks.
3383 with me in it. man e-bodies are heavy!

Re: My car is a pig! - 01/26/19 06:45 PM
My wife's '70 Barracuda weighs 3603 w/o driver with about 3 gallons of gas in the tank. Iron head 440, 727, Dana 60, 3" exhaust all the way back to the tips, all steel, with a full interior. No power steering or brakes. No AC.
Battery still in factory location.
It weighs 3802 with me in it. I can't say what it weighs with her in it. (Less than me of course.)
I weighed it at the local truck stop 7 years ago...it weighed 3600 even at the time. I always questioned the accuracy of the scale, but I guess it was pretty darn close after all.

And 57% front / 43% rear doesn't surprise me, either.
I wonder if '70 B bodies weight more than '68-69s...

I always thought E bodies were lighter... I love your Cuda and especailly like your homage to the St louis Blues. I am a diehard Blackhawks fan, but can still appreciate the hockey reference

Not where it shows. Obviously a few tricks to get it this light and look untouched. But it can be done in steel.

This was 3760 (W/O driver) with a 655ci Wedge. Currently running a 580 wedge it's likely to be around 3735. Mild steel cage, heavy glass hood (the only glass part) and a full interior bar the upper part of the back seat. If it was 400lb lighter we would have met our 8.99 goal N/A years ago

Woah!
I was 3621 on the last set up. Hoping to shed a few LBS with the aluminum hemi and GERST suspension!

My '69 road runner is a couple hundred pounds lighter than my '70 cuda in VERY similar condition. The E bodies are definitely heavier than comparable B bodies even though they're about a foot shorter, lol.
