BB Rod and Main Bearings

BB Rod and Main Bearings - 12/12/18 05:29 PM

Starting on a new build.
Whose main and rod bearings do you use and why?
This will be a 572 with 2.20 rods and standard 440 main size.
I have ordered bearings in the past that varied between pairs and also one set would have more thrust clearance than the next set would.
Just looking for some consistency and thought I would pick your brains on this.
thanks in advance

Clevite H series. 1/2 groove mains #2233, rods #743. 300 passes on rods with no wear. Aprox 900hp, 572, 7200 rpm. Rods clear big radius crank filet. Mains wear more than the rods. 525 passes, no failures.

I like and use the Federal Mogul H.D. full narrow groove truck main bearing sets #4095 and the Federal Mogul BB Chevy rod bearings that are narrowed and chamfered # 2320P or the Clevite # CB743N or the King bearing # CR806XPND depending on what size the crankshaft journals are(stock or over or under that size) and how much clearance I measure with all of the bearings scope
I shoot for more clearances than some others on here, I like to use the .0010 + for each one inch of journal size, IE minimum of .0022 or more for the BB Chevy rod journals and a minimum of .0028 on the BB Mopar main bearing clearances twocents

Well, for me I've become a fan of King in a drag race motor like most of us build. Clevite is a great bearing as are most that's out there these days.

I like King for a couple reasons in a race motor. First the bearing is tapered, so as the crank flexes, it's less likely grab near the radius. Second, they're really tough, and the normal crap flying around in the oil gets embedded pretty easily. They're also very forgiving in the ole no oil on shut down, start up ect. They also give a bit more clearance, if you're under the max housing bore size. Also seem to be more round after the parting relief.

As for clearance, .0035 on rods and mains for me, and no less than .003. I'd rather have .005 than .002anything, but that's just me.

I had to work with a couple of blocks lately that the main bores were about .001 big from the factory. I did not want to align hone to get it down to size. Most all the bearings I had in stock and ordered had too much clearance on the mains. I tried the Kings and they came in .001 tighter. They cured the problem with the correct clearance. They offer .001 under mains as well. They were too tight.

Hey fast mark, did you use the HP kings, or their other lines?

I used the King rod and cam bearings in my LD 511 for the first time. Used Molnar crank and rods with 2.200 journal. King CR808HPN rod, Clevite H half groove bearings on the mains. Bought 2 sets to get full groove oiling on the main. Clearances came out real nice first try at .0028 on rods and .0033 on mains. Still running with 65-70# hot oil pressure cruising and 30# idle hot using Amsoil 15/50 Dominator. So far so good.
Correction: I used the Clevite ms876p full groove main bearing.

I'd like to know if you guys are using King's tri-metal (HP?) or standard bi-metal (aluminum?) bearings. The recommended applications for bi-metal bearings vary significantly, depending on which company's guidance I've read.

Looks like tri-metals are going to be a thing of the past for a couple of reasons that I've heard. No OEMs use them any longer, and they're prohibited by some countries because of having lead in the tri-metal layers.

The CR808HPN i used are listed as Bi metal silocon aluminum. Its the bearing King recommended for my app.
