My 1st small block build

Never really did much with the smaller version but thought it would work in the Valiant better than a B engine .

This motor may not be the last one we will have to see where to go from here .

The basics are , its a stock stroke , 30 over 360

Has Eagle crank and rods , Edelbrock performers , with a light port on them

The cam is a flat tappet , I have the part number ,etc but not at my finger tips right now from Hughes

Super Victor intake , quick fuel 850 carb

Msd Dist that is locked out


Compression is 12.6 ..

Harland sharp rockers ..


I got home late from the dyno, made 495hp @ 482 tq --6500 rpm's


I needed a carb spacer to push it over the 500 mark, did not bring one with

I am fixing to get started on one that I am planning to drop in a noisy street car.
A little less cam and compression , but the plan is to go the 408 stroker route.
I am trying to decide if I want to throw the set of Milodon main caps at this one , or save them for a project that may actually need them. lol
The target is an '80 Volare wagon , so it will be a true grocery getter.

I found the base of the project locally , it was not exactly what I wanted but, it was close and budget friendly

I have been admiring the Kevko stuff for a pretty good while , but haven't pulled the trigger.
I got a Steff's for my Dart using a Summit code and buying a lot of $$ parts a few years back.
Then I found a deal in the classifieds on here for a Moroso pan and pick up last month.
I will eventually try one of their pans I think though.
For the price and the features , they are a pretty good deal.

Watch out Bigdad, as these small blocks become addictive. They are so easy to get running 9's or low 10's and so easy to work on compared to big blocks in tight spaces. Not really a fan of the Super Victor intake although I did run 9.73 with one after LOTS of work. Its now sitting on a shelf probably never to be used again. Love the Indy intake and the Victor 340.

Lot of pluses in a small block. Distributor's at the back for better weight distribution. Plus it's mounted vertically, so the electricity won't leak out like on the big ones, where it's all tipped over 'n' such. Parts are smaller, so they cost less. They fit in smaller cars, so you don't need nearly as big a tow rig. They're more economical, and with the price of C-12 these days, that can make a difference in the racing budget.
You know the old saying; Once you go A, you never, ummm...well, danged if I know.

What next bigdad, a Slant?

I run the kevco pan. Happy with it doesn’t hang real low. The only issue is the drain is OUTSIDE the sump baffle area so it traps oil in the pan during oil changes. I just installed another drain plug.

Sounds like easy mid-11s in the Valiant, depending on weight & gear. Maybe low 11s.
