Pistons for 512ci low deck - 12/07/18 06:17 PM

While walking around PRI, Icon, and Diamond have a "shelf" piston for the 512 B block combo. Anyone have experience with Icon. They look like a very nice piston.

My wife, dad and sister all have Icon pistons in their engines. All are small blocks, but very nice pistons for the money.

I use ICON on a lot of builds. I just sent Brett Miller a set for a Small Block he built and he said he liked them.

I have ICON's in my own 469

We have ICON's in a NE1 (7.60 index) Front Engine Dragster.

They are a great piston.

Another vote for ICON! Several builds, all was/is good! Great customer service if you have any questions too.

635C's will be going into my G3 build as well.

I like to use the street alloy, not the looser 2616 alloy tsk, version of any brand pistons on all of my motors. Ross does not make that tighter(edited) alloy so I stop using them down I believe all of the Icon brand BB Mopar pistons are the tighter alloy up I have used them in several motors now thumbs

mahle makes one too i believe, has 8cc worth of pockets if you're looking for a flat top.

If by "tighter" you mean 4032 and "looser" 2618, then you need to know which Icon piston series you're looking into. IIRC, the FHR series are 4032, and the others -- including all the BBM stroker pistons I've seen of theirs -- are 2618.

Last time I checked, Ross only used 2618; Diamond used both materials, depending upon the application; JE SRPs were 4032, but the "regular" JEs were 2618; RaceTec is 2618 and AutoTec is 4032; Mahle uses both, depending upon the application... etc.

Ya gotta do your research. scope

Oh, you can put me in the "Icon pistons are 'OK', but there are others I like better" category. Their big advantage is that they stock a wide variety of BBM bore & stroke options that most other piston companies don't.

Todd at competition wedge engines suggested I take a look at the ICONS before spending a bunch of money. I did and that's what's in my 511. $500 a set was a bargain. Farly lite weight as well.

If you want lower clearances, get them with the line to line coating, it's a factory option now. S/F....Ken M

For you guys running a 4.25 stroke crank in your lowdeck, are you able to run the stock oil pickup or are you forced to go to an external system?

Icon told me at PRI, the coating will be standard, once all old stock is bought up.

Stock pickup here. 2.20 Molnar rods. The closest area was the pickup boss and it cleared by .060 if I recall...

No grinding anywhere.

What's the part number for the Pistons you guys are using

Re: Pistons for 512ci low deck - 12/11/18 07:19 PM

I've built 4 or 5 400 block stroker motors with 4.25 crankshafts with both H beam and I beam rods and two 4.300 stroke crankshafts with internal and external oiling systems, on the five motors I used a stock 3/8 internal pickup I had to grind around .030 to .060 off the pickup boss near the threaded end to clear the front rod scope
Mock up the crankshaft in your block and install the front two rods and pistons with no rings on the pistons and check what grinding, if any, your block will need scope
The stock size Mopar rods need a lot more grinding with the steel H and I beam rods shruggy

Thats good to know Cab, thanks. I'm on the fence whether to do a 470" or 511" low deck stroker for a street/strip setup. If the 511" is alot more hassles it may not be worth it for the extra 41" for a street car.
