Bronze or coated drive gears ???

Just going over my parts list for the roller cam conversion and I have been researching distributor drive gears with mixed reviews.
Are there any negatives with either gear ? This is mainly a street car with about 1500 miles a year and maybe a dozen passes down the track. I plan on adding a collar on the distributor shaft while it's out. There seems to be an issue(according to the manufacturer) when running a high volume or high pressure pump.
Now most engines with a roller cam run one or the other style pump So that just sounds like a CYA from the company.

Any new information out there?

I have only used the bronze ones. No issue with HV oil pump. They do wear, but not too bad. My old engine had around 10,000 miles on it and the drive was worn to where it should have been replaced, but built an entire new engine, and used a new pump drive.

Crane coated here.

Pulled it to prime the engine a few weeks ago and it looked new. Over 5,500 miles and hundreds of dragstrip passes in the last 3 years. Car gets driven a LOT!

All a high volume, high pressure pump is good for is sucking the pan dry before the stripe!

Hughes Engines has the coated gears attached to a HD shaft.

I used the Hughes coated gear, HV pump with a adjustable bypass valve, set @ 65 psi hot, there is a reason I run the HV pump, have 2k miles on it & checked it the other day, it was still like new. I also have the collar on the dist shaft.

I see that Hughes gear is a coated gear - all of the non-bronze gears for a roller cam I have seen are made of a composite material - personally the the bronze gear is in my mind the better choice - they are a wear item especially with big spring pressures and a big oil pump - we normally change them out every two seasons of racing as a maintenance item

I've only used the bronze ones with M63HV oil pump. They do wear noticeably and it's actually visible in the drain oil, but it's not horribly bad or difficult to deal with.

All I use is the bronze one.. I had about 5 of
of them so I use what I have.. I even use them
on flat tappet stuff

Well I'm going to stop by Summit tomorrow on my way home from work and check out the Comp Cams gear they sell. I have a new HD shaft with a steel gear on it so I'm going to swap gears on this shaft and see how it works out.

I bet you ruin the shaft getting old gear off--better to buy complete assembly--Bronze gets my Vote--yea they wear but you can keep an eye on it--HUghes says no HV or HP pumps as they accelerate wear--duh? Put a bronze in run the kind of pump you need or want Milodons are good

Hughes is simply repeating what Crane says about their melonized gears, since Crane makes the gears that Hughes uses with their gear & shaft assemblies.

I took my new Crane gear and old gear/shaft to the machinist that did the work on my block. He swapped gears after carefully measuring. He did it while I was there and didn't charge me anything.

I'd LIKE to try a melonized gear to see how it holds up, but will hold off until I see what sort of wear my bronze gear shows after some miles.

Also, one of the other Crane/Hughes warnings is that you're not supposed to put their gear on a used cam. Considering I'm not planning to buy a new cam simply to use that type of gear after having already dyno'd the engine, it could be a LONG time before I ever try one.

My buddy has had terrible time with the bronze gears in a 600 hp 440. Street driven quite a bit, last time he had a couple thousand miles and the teeth sheared. Had to get towed home and he was NOT happy. He wants to try the melonized gear too.

This is the one I use. I figured by the time I tried to get the old gear off and new one on and maybe hurting the shaft it was easier to buy once cry once.

Installed on solid roller and M63HV pump no wear after a year.

And yes even thou they say not to use it on a used cam and HV pump I did and it appears to be fine.
