trans brake button placement?

trans brake button placement? - 03/13/09 06:02 AM

Hi guys, , I was going to place my trans brake button on my steering wheel but one issue is the spokes aren,t where I usually place my hand, I could learn to hold my hand alsewhere on the wheel, or replace the wheel. The other thought is behind my shifter, as I built a stand for it and it would be comfortable there. So I,m thinking hold the button floor it , let go reach up and shift. I have the biondo button .o3 delay so the button is quite long. What are your thoughts as I,ve never used a trans brake before, thanks Tim

Put it where you are comfortable with it and make sure it is safe

I agree with cab. sit in your car and try to find the most comfortable place. I like mine down by the shifter in my dads duster but in my cuda i like it on the steering wheel.

I've always let go of the button the reached up to shift 2nd. It's a natural motion.

Mine is on the roll cage above me. I have one set up for left hand and one for the right hand depending who is driving.

It's a matter of personal preference. My dad, and youngest brother like thiers on the wheel. Mine MUST be down by the shifter, I've never been able to cut a light with buttons on the wheel, it's really a noticeable difference in my case.

My Challenger has a funny car cage, and you sit low, so the button mount ended up on the passengers side of the tunnel, even with the shifter.
In my Valiant, the seat is off the floor, so I took the two large bolts that run through the top portion of a Cheetah SCS Shifter, attached a flat bar running back from those about 4 inches behind the shifter, and mounted the button to that. To just look in the 2 cars, it appears to be 2 completely different locations, but I can drop my arm down without looking, and immediately find them, as the location relative to where I'm sitting is identical.

It really helps to have it where your comfortable,
I have the same button on my steering wheel on the
left side. Its recessed on a bracket so its not in
the way. I rest my left arm on the door ledge with my
hand on the wheel, thumb on the button.. nice and steady,
works for me

Mine is located on the shifter as well. I know there are thousands of cars with them on the wheel, but I'm just not comfortable with the wiring gettting wrapped around the column as you turn the wheel. Seems like an opportunity for failure. Maybe that's just me though......

Re: trans brake button placement? - 03/13/09 03:08 PM

I agree with you Mark. I installed mine on the wheel a few years ago. I liked it until I was going into the final and I had to pull out from behind another car. As I was turning the wheel to pull around the cord got hung up and ultimately the wires all got ripped out of the t-brake switch. Now I have it mounted on the dash. I like it! Especially when I have to back up. I love watching my buddies with it on the wheel trying to manouver in the pits. Now I still have the factory steering column in mine so there is lots of places for the cord to get hung up. However, the same thing happened to my buddy in the final of a divisional and he has a tube car with the aftermarket thin column.

Well I have been a floor/shifter mount guy forever. However in the Barracuda the I could not find a comfortable place to mount it on the floor or near the shifter. The F/C cage was an issue with my arm length and size. Like Billy I had never been able to cut alight with one on the wheel but I have concurred that and am now comfortable with it there. But I really would prefer the floor. Or one of those Trans Trigger deals....

I have mine mounted on the steering wheel and just installed a plug similar to the distributor plug for whenever I am turning.

I use a plug also, I use a 1/4" head phone style plug
that plugs into the dash forward of the wheel just above
the steering column. On the switch end it has a couple
of tie wraps that take any load if you were to pull
on the wire... plus I use the coiled type of wire
that you can stretch out

Very good suggestions guys, I think the most comfortable position is where it will go. My shifter tower is home built, the right hieght and lots of room, I think I got it. Thanks Tim

Re: trans brake button placement? - 03/13/09 04:24 PM

I have a factory column W/ a removable wheel and wasn't to thrilled about the idea of the cable getting wrapped up. However, after sitting in the car and trying various places and how my arm would "feel" coming off the button the choice for me was clear. On the wheel. So I have to deal with the cord.

It's all about comfort and feel. Put it where it's most natural for you.

And, if you do choose the wheel, and if you need an button to back up (some T brakes do others don't) you can always install a second button that's in a location that's eayier to manuver with.

Mine is down behind the shifter.

Wherever you end up mounting it I would make sure you are using arm movement as opposed to just a finger or thumb movement as arm movement is proven to be faster than finger or thumb movement alone. Large muscle groups move faster than small muscle groups. It is also said that most individuals have a faster reaction time using the left arm even if right handed due to the path of nerves from the brain to the arm on your left side is a shorter path. I use my right arm....????

Frank Hawley has some very interesting theories and facts on driver mindset that is pretty cool.

I have mine on the floor next to the shifter for the delay box and one on the side of the shifter for reverse. Like others have said put it wherever it is most comfortable for you.

The fun part is going to be figuring out when to let go of the button, and then how much delay I can back out of it or add. I left footbreaking in the middle of the 3rd yellow, but I,m thinking the first sign of 2cnd or3rd yellow would be much better and more consistent not in the middle, Tim

I made a bracket that mounts to the base of my shifer and installed the button off the right side of the shiter.

You'll have to figure that part out but your right,
you wont have to split a light(I cant do that for sh!t).
I could never get .3 out of it either

I agree with ya on that mr pbody as the old light was easier, but now everywhere is led and my reaction times are all over the place, get the odd good one then oh oh rely on the other guy to screw up more then you, not a good percentage. Which way on that button adds or subtracts time, Tim

If you want to ADD more time screw the red part down,
you will notice that the actual switch is right near
the top of the travel

Re: trans brake button placement? - 03/14/09 01:38 AM

mines mounted next to air shifter. But i use to run it at dash so i had to reach a little because i believe you have to look at how your body moves to pull your hand finger away.
I dont like the steering wheel i feel i grip it to hard to pull my thumb off and ready for the launch.Delay box guys can wait and move thier hands feel
racers are a qwirky bunch

In my dads duster we mounted it right behind the shifter. I do the whole arm motion and reach up and pull back 2nd. Just go through the motion a bunch in your car.
