Front spoilers

does anyone know if the front spoiler gave any performance difference on or off the track?

out of all honesty I put one on my car it definitely did not slow it down.. I haven't proven it to be a benefit but then again I believe the car still sits too high I'm looking at having a bumper made with a spoiler Incorporated.. perhaps one that hangs down a little lower..

Ask Digby...if the quickest leaf spring car in the world runs one, it must have some benefit.

I added a front spoiler to my Dart which definately pulled the front down at speed. Unfortunately it made the back twitchy at 140 mph so i had to add another spoiler on there to fix that. The plus side was, the car was extremely stable & my e.t became very consistant after that.

Mine helps the engine run cooler, by creating a lower pressure under the car & pulls hot air out of the engine compartment.

I've added one to my Challenger with the intent of reducing the amount of air being trapped under the front end at speed.

Don't know yet but I added one to my blown 68 Barracuda and it just sits barely 3" off the floor. I had to add a 1" board before my ramp flap to keep it from scraping. Anxious to feel the result.

80arrow, the couple of pictures I have does not show up good. I'll try to take some more that will show it better. I used a Ferd I believe it was an Exployer spoiler and shortened it about 6". with just a few holes it bolted up to my glass frontend great.

A cautionary message:
A front spoiler will keep the nose down (and cause oversteer if the car was "balanced" before).
What happens if the car get sideways at speed? The spoiler almost stops working (the frontal area is not the full width of the car, but the shorter diagonal) and the car may may understeer. That's what the big side plates on the rear wing are for - to keep air on the wing.
The better spoilers partially wrap around the nose corners to delay and lessen this effect.

what about e body chin spoilers? astetics only? or the 70 cyclone full
front spoiler?

I went looking for a front spoiler for an E body but the only one i found that looked like it would have any effect was that big ugly AAR version. I ended up just fitting the eyebrow tips for asthetics more than anything else.

This one is off of a late model Charger. Trims up pretty easily with a utility knife.

There was a discussion about late '60's Camaros and their spoiler options in Stock and Super Stock racing. Apparently the spoiler option included the front & rear together. Some were trying to run with only the front spoiler, which wasn't legal. The front spoiler was said to help aerodynamics by keeping some of the air from getting underneath while the rear ducktail spoiler was left off because it caused more drag and slowed the car a bit in a drag racing application.

Absolute fact. Remove the rear spoiler on a Camaro and mph goes up. Front spoiler blocks air from getting under the car and mph goes up. There are also small panels that block air from bypassing the radiator used only on a/c Camaros that also improve mph. I would even go so far as blocking off the back side of the grille completely with clear Plexiglas on a drag race only car and get even better airflow over the car and increase pressure in the area of the cowl induction inlet if I thought it would slip by the inspectors.

Ok that looks like it has potential. Im not in the US so i need to know if that is a year specific spoiler & a ballpark figure on price would be great. Can you enlighten me please?

In class racing, "IF" it would temporarily get by the tech inspectors, it probably wouldn't get past the other racers. That's for circle track and less restricted drag classes..

Thanks for the precaution!! I don't know if my car needs one or not. I just thought it would look neat. I do not run a bumper on my glass front end and it provides an excellent mounting for the spoiler. The ends even wrap around to the beginning of the wheel well. Don't know how it's going to drive yet with the front so low. But even with the low front there is 50/50 wgt distribution. I was concerned about that but it came out nice. I've done a lot of changes in the last couple years, new rear and suspension, removed front suspension and replaced with my K lamb struts and R&P steering with spindle mount wheels. Replaced iron heads with Alum but added a 6-71 blower and FI. Surprisingly it increased my total weight by only 60lbs which is naturally the blower. I just scaled it and the rear has 50.03% of the weight w/driver.

I would try to estimate what the "attitude" (nose up, nose down) of the car is at trap speed. Sometimes a high res video from the lights will help, plotted against static attitude. They used to duct tape sticks with stripes painted on them to the fenders vertically - shows how far the suspension sinks.
If the car is nose high at speed a nose dam, spoiler, lip, splitter (extends forward but not down, still helps) will probably help.

if you notice on newer cars they have plastic covers on underside i'm assuming its for aerodynamics. i even thought of shielding the back bumper so it doesn't act as a parachute.
