Anyone have any experience with 440 Source Strokers? Thinking about getting one but want to make sure they are good quality, Thanks Joe

That's an interesting read, I'm conceitering a new short block with there 4.25 crank. I was looking on there site last night and wòndering about there pistons, I used Icon in a Ford build with success. The question about balancing, every part would be truly balanced before assembly.

I have belted piss out of my 440 Source 528, it has run 9.2's @ 145 in a 63 Ply, now in my Barracuda and it has even survived a split block, it all went into another block.
No problem .

Is your 528 based on a stock 440 block?

Same here. My Indy headed 500 cubic inch engine ran 275 passes with many in the 8.60’s@155 mph plus before I found a cracked block during a freshen job. It to is still going in a street car. I will be putting together a 4.250 stroke mega block combo this winter.

Yes, the one I split and the replacement both 440 blocks and both 1/2 grout filled .

My 440/493 is a 440Source 4.15 stroker kit. I use their pistons and rods also. My 63 is a street car that I only race about once a year lately but this eng has been in my car since 2011 and I have raced it about 7 times since then. Shift at 6200 and trap at 6400. Has run 10.70's driven to track and raced as I drive it. Its still going strong and running great. Ron

Might want to check out Tom Molnar's stuff also. I run his crank and rods and JE pistons. He likes CP pistons as do I but I was on a time crunch so I went with JE.

Great product, great price...We have built lots of them. And we race the hell out of them.

I always opt for the ARP upgrade, and we always use the plate on the bottom that re-enforces everything..Balance on the kits has been good, and the bearings match...

We like the Icon pistons....If you look at the name on the pistons in the 440Source kits, they say Icon on them.

I'm working on my second Source engine now B 400/512. First was RB 440/496. Completed engine in 2013 and runs perfect. Engine builder said it was a good kit and needed very little work. Start assembly on second next week after I get a few parts. Both of these kits were purchased in about 2011 I think. I have not used any of their newer kits but I have no complaints of their older kits.

Like I said, we have a tone of them running around here. The guys I race with all have them. The 440/512 is a power house and the most popular, and we recently built a 440/526 and a 400/512 with the light weight crank option. If you can keep the rpm in check, life is good. I personally have nearly 1000 documented passes on my old 440/512 combo.

I would love to build one of these with a good after market block someday.

Not trying to start a catfight ; simply looking for what people should expect these days.

Originally there were regular complaints about excessive taper and out-of-round journals w/ 440 Source cranks. This was not limited to that brand, since a number of the offshore cranks had (and may still have) similar problems.

I believe the quality of at least one other brand that also had this reputation has improved, based on what I've measured myself. Has 440 Source likewise improved their production QC? What are the machinists & engine builders who work with these parts saying about how close they are to being "ready to run" these days? It used to be almost SOP that people were told to budget for getting the rods & mains turned. It would be nice if that was no longer the case.

At one point their kits came with Ross pistons, then they switched to Icon. I'm not a big fan of Icons (not a big fan of BBM Ross pistons these days, either), but they have a lot of different versions that fit all those stroker kit options.

the 440 (528 cube) piston CH is either 1.355" or 1.320". Would there be a long term longevity issue with that short of CH? Any other (potential) issues just from that dimention?

I did a 400/512 with the lightweight crank, as well. Have you had it out and about yet? What do you think?

Re: 440 source strokers? - 10/17/18 11:53 AM

We ran the 400/512 with light weight crank all summer. We had some issues early on, but seemed to get by them. Quickest it went on pump gas was a 6.19 in the 1/8th at 110....The 440/512 went as quick as 6.14 at nearly 112....We were catching the 440 based one as we kept jetting the 400 up but ran out of season. The 60ft with it has been 1.35, its the top end we have been looking for more. It doesn't pull as hard on the top end as the other engine. Same cam and heads, so we have been wondering why...

Differences in the intake and/or carb?

Wow! I think even Brandon would chuckle reading this post... considering how many times he was burned at the stake over the years. laugh2

I always thought if I were to do a new short block in my Mirada days I’d a gone that direction. I’m not a rainbow chaser and the stuff certainly had to be better than my stock welded crank and LY rods!

We had two members that always jumped into these posts and belittled 440source products. They have been pretty quiet on the subject for the last few years. They must have gotten girlfriends or a cat 🐈 or something. Lol

Carb is the same, intake is new 400 based, and it wants more jet.I was really hoping to be in the 6.0's this year. Didn't happen. Gonna do a tear down on it. maybe send the heads & intake out..we will see.
