Anyone use a toy hauler type tag trailer? - 10/13/18 07:10 PM

Anyone use a toy hauler type tag trailer to get their race car to the track? What's the good & bad about these things? This one is on Craigslist & I'm kindda interested.

If your race car sits as high as a 3/4 ton pickup the short steep ramp might be ok...
I spy 3500lb axles? That’d be a turnoff for me.
Curious what the trailer weighs and what the max payload can be....

That said kicking the car out and having a comfortable place to hang out and a shower/potty can make a race weekend oh so much more enjoyable!

GVWR is 13,000. Payload is 5,760 pounds. My car weighs approx. 2500.
I don't like the 15" tires or the height of the floor. Loading could be a problem.

I've never seen anyone use those for a fullsize car. Not to say it can't be done but those seem to be designed for sxs's or dirtbikes/quads, maybe a sand rail on a good day. Like you have seen, the door/ramp's approach angle is not really set up for a car.

You can add longer ramps onto the door to help change the loading angles, is it a dove tail rear now or straight floor?
I would look at changing the tires to all E rated tires as soon as possible, did I tell you I HATE TRAILER tires puke runaway
Another thing to do if you can is to take it to a certified public scale and weigh that trailer your self before deciding on buying it or not up twocents
I've owned three enclosed car trailers, all of them are heavy. The first new one I bought was a 22 ft. Pace Shadow 7000 Lbs. gross weight rating that the salesman told me it would weigh right at 2900 lbs. empty with no option, he LIED puke
I him wanted to upgrade the 3500 LB. axles to 5200 Lbs. but he told me that Pace wouldn't allow that, he lied about that also down
It weighed 4150 lbs. empty the day I picked it up at the factory in Hurricane, UT, I didn't know that federal law required all trailer maker weigh each one before it is sold, I called Pace after I weighed it and they ask me for the VIN and told me exactly what it weighed the day I picked it up whiney They also ask me why I didn't have the axles, wheels and tires upgraded when I ordered it shock I told the rep I had tried three different times and was told Pace wouldn't build it that way. I was told by that rep that Pace would build any trailer to the customers specs as long as the customer was willing to pay for the changes work
The dang California trailer salesman lied, it was his company policy to not sell any trailers that would carry more weight in it than the manufacturer had designed it for runaway
My current 10,000 Lb. rated 24 Ft. Pace Shadow has blown the tread off of so many dang trailer tires I lost count around 4 sets ago puke
I have weighed it multiple times loaded ready to go the races and it has right at 4300 Lbs. on each axle, it adds right at 700 Lbs. on the trailer hitch and removes around 300 Lbs from the front axle of my Ram 3500 4x4 four door single wheel long bed pickup shock shruggy
My next trailer, if I buy another one, will be a gooseneck type with, hopefully, living quarters in it also thumbs

How much floor space is there?
Like what was said and you commented on. the tires are too small and the axles too small to carry a car(2500#) and camper. Like said, I think it is built for smaller lighter vehicles?
Remember, your payload includes 120 gallons of water to begin with. Then you fill up the holding tanks and add more fresh water before dumping the holding tanks sometimes if your not near a dump station...they weight a lot. Propane for inside the tank. Then add all the things you put into a RV/camper. That don't leave that much extra carrying capacity.
I have said recently on here about living quarters trailers, they are heavy. 13k pounds is pretty heavy to be towing. Try taking that some place like a soft field somewhere... fan

Open floor space is approx. 19'. My car (93 Daytona) is approx. 16' long but not much space for tool box, golf cart, etc. I like the LQ set-up in this trailer. Looks like it would be good for a weekend at the track without pulling a 48' gooseneck. I'm thinking the cons out weigh the pros on this one.

I have a 2004 Millenium LQ trailer 32' 2-axle with a 20' garage, been great for me and the wife. Had it built new and 14 years later it is still in good condition, but could use a few things fixed. Still take it to shows and have had a 69 D200 pickup in it a few times. Scaled it with that trunk and full gear at 11, 420 lbs. up

That looks like a good set-up. Does it have the usual LQ stuff (Shower/toilet, Kitchen, Bed) ?
I looked at a nice 32' a year or so ago but it sold before I could get it.

I had a Work n Play by Forest River, built tough. It was a 24' with 18' cargo area. Sorry I sold it best toy hauler I've ever had. Had a 31' fifth wheel with 17' of cargo area. Load my car and the side door would not close. Won't mention the builder, but they are out of San Diego, Calif. And car only weighed 2400lbs

Yep, 12' living quarters fully self-contained, can't be too large for the shower/toiler/sink combo, but fits me fine. Built in fridge, 2-burner stove, microwave, couch folds to a bed, table with two seats folds to a bed to sleeps two comfortably. Lot of storage too, they have several packages that fit most needs. The gooseneck is even nicer, but I like to have the bed of my truck open to haul parts to shows too. With 20' garage there is just enough room for my Dart, a generator, and pit bike if not too large.

Re: Anyone use a toy hauler type tag trailer? - 10/16/18 02:31 AM

I wanted one...I do a lot of four wheeling and racing, and looked at them for the last couple of years. None of them are cheap. Only a few have a built in generator, and none had 24ft garage with an escape door and living quarters...So I got some quotes...Didn't like those prices.

The ones I finally liked are up above $50k.....

So I settled on this route...Cost a lot less, and my trailer is all setup the way I like it...

Sadly I think that’s the direction I should go Dragula.... but I’d need to add on to the garage. I just cannot make that kind on investment and leave it outside in the desert climate in which I live.

I've seen some Craigslist ads for Work & Play trailers. LQs look good but the cargo area has been to small. Like 10 to 14 feet.

Re: Anyone use a toy hauler type tag trailer? - 10/16/18 02:59 PM

I had a 34 foot tag with small living quarters, trailer was kind of heavy and getting older requiring more and more maintance. I looked at motor homes and a smaller trailer. I settled on a Palomino slide in pop up camper for the truck and a 26 foot tag for the race car. Camper has shower, queen bed, A/C etc. When folded down it is the same height as the car trailer, so it kind of cuts the wind better. camper and trailer combo is 2,000lbs lighter than the old 34 foot tag with living quarters. Also I took just the camper to Yellowstone, one of the best vacations I ever had.

I looked at a bunch of slide in campers, and based on their square footage, they are the most costly to buy with the highest depreciation if buying new.

Not to mention, the one I wanted, the American Hero for flatbeds was discontinued and started at $30k.....

I would have gone that rout if they still had those available and switched to a long bed truck.

I think I'll keep looking for a LQ trailer. Motorhomes are nice but I don't want another vehicle to maintain, insure & pay storage (can't keep it at the house).

Yes I agree depreciation on all kinds of campers is pretty bad, even motor homes. I bought my slide in used, and had to travel 6 hours to get it, just not very many of them out there. Did not realize they built a flatbed slide in style, until your post. Looks like I may try and find one of them in the future.

Re: Anyone use a toy hauler type tag trailer? - 10/17/18 03:32 PM

Our “fan favorite” idea was to go a 46 ft goose neck that had more “living” anemities. Still had room for the golf cart in front of the work bench. We considered we could use it for camping and with its added height could even throw the Jeep in for fun in the mountains..... BUT.. in research you’ll have a tough time finding a campground that has room or even allows that size of rig.

I have a 32' tag. It has shower, sh!tter, stove, sink, fridge, HVAC, awning, two cots and a drop down bed. I can get the car and golf cart in the cargo area but the cart has to be turned sideways.

It's nice to be able to stay at races.

HR3128, I ordered my work&play from Forest River. Was 24' 17' cargo area and had a bathroom with toilet, sink, and shower. Kitchen area with sink, stove and fridge. I installed fold down couch/bed on each wall. Loved it. But wrecked my car in Vegas in 11' sold my trailer to rebuild car.

Don't get me wrong, I would love one of the nicer ones, but they ain't cheap....And none of them have the side escape door my trailer has. I did a lot of research on this, and the way I went was the best compromise I could come up with.

And the flatbed camper option I liked:

Great trailers but WAY WAY outta my price range.

I've seen long flat bed trailers with a short pop up bolted to the front sideways.
Atc makes nice ones but big $. I have a toy hauler for the motorcycle and love it. Use it as a camper with the wife n kids and use it for going to motorcycle drag races and stay at the track.

No doubt....And then look at those little $30k slide in campers...Its nuts. But I figured if I did it, the wife has to be happy too because we go four wheeling when we can.

The smallest class A I could find were the 24ft Georgie Boy 2450DS...but man people treat those like they are collectors items.

Yikes!!! $50K for a 14 year old motorhome. My old dually & 24' trailer (with AC) will have to do for now.
