I saw a bunch of street race cars over the weekend, I kept thinking why wouldn't they at least have a bar??? Do they not where helmets? It looked like the nitrous bottle was bouncing around in that car like It was seat belted in or something.

Gary Roe was running in the mid 8's 20+ years ago with 4 lug axles.
and those aren't " bling" front wheels. those are race wheels.
the whole purpose of a street race car, is to spend money making it fast. not pretty. not safe.
there's plenty of tracks down south where that car would be fine to run, with no cage.

Every soul there that night were lucky.
This is why tracks need to stay open, especially in more dense urban areas where Grudge nights can hosted for these kinds of forward motion jousting.

Most of us, but not all have done such acts before when first getting into this hobby/way of life. Even Shirley Muldowney has had her flare with the street.
The problem here is that cars are so violently fast and hacked apart to have that edge on a no prep surface and a no prep $)-(!t hitting the fan situation.
No-one there looked at the moisture building up on the cars glass and body, a clear indication of money and ego over common sense at all.
The very same thing happen to friend of mine way back in the early 90's with a very fast Malibu.
His urgency to show the other side how fast and furious his car was had eclipsed common sense on a humid/moist night. I was yelling at him to keep the car on the trailer and he still went against a better judgement. He too, walked away to see his three children sleeping their beds that night. Car was totaled. and facing the opposite way towards the crowd in the hole. Again, everyone was lucky that night.

Dang. The driver should go buy a lottery ticket. I admit - I run on the outer edge of “adequate”. But skating on a bucket full of razor blades and dynomite? I just don’t get it. Shoot. I’m not even comfortable letting my kids ride in the back of the Duster anymore since I installed a roll bar. Ignorance is bliss I guess....

THIS fiasco reminds me of a Thursday nite/Friday morning race in the 'burbs of Detroit in the late 80's on I-275. We all roll out from the Denny's around midnite with about 6 pair of cars to race. First pair was Terry Irving a NOS 351 Cleveland Mustang - heated the tires - staged the car - left good but hit the button toooo early !!!!
He swerved JUST LIKE THAT guy but bounced off about 8 cars that were on the side watching the races l it took him 5 plus years to pay off all that damage. I don't think he ever street raced again.
There were other screwy instances there at other times .., I had one MEself ! lol

True, but the family he takes out when he hits their mini van didn’t choose to take that risk. I know the spot seemed reasonably safe for other traffic, but that is not true all the time.

Re: But But BUTT street racing is sooooo cool - 10/12/18 03:03 PM
I dont drink, but I dont hate people who do but I am aware of the stats around drinking and the crashes and deaths from it.
My point is statistically drinking and driving is far worse and cause far more harm then street racing, neither is right.
I dont hide the fact I street race and even with good equipment and a very rural place its still foolish to a point, kinda like the drinker saying "I take the back roads home". Still wrong on both fronts.
Our time here on this earth is not perfect, its not going to be perfect, and some say it wasnt made to be perfect, unfortunate things happen every day in every aspect of life.
Just like the current hurricane in Florida, very sad and unfortunate but people who live and build there know it can happen, are they foolish? No, just human.

Some dont even get the fact that a cage makes the car quicker. That guy should be happy to be alive.

Forty years ago we felt lucky to make a pass or two in the middle of nowhere without the law breaking up the party.

Alot of places they just make themselves known and folks clear out, some times they watch.
Ive had a OD Officer friend ride with me and watch on many occasions.
As long as no one is impaired there are some who understand its not the end of all things and in this day and age its just clean honest fun.
Ive also been told the better places to run from a LEO and the best time to do it, one being Sunday afternoons during NFL time.
A problem is only as big as some want to make out of it.

Both of the shot angles show the Mississippi cars shift light coming on a couple of times meaning that since they were both anxious to get the ahead almost trading paint in doing so, he had the Mo-Jo juice on to loose with the goose pedal too soon. Combined with what looks to be a moist black tar top surface, nothing but a crash would follow.
What I mostly saw as a annexed miracle in this day and time is the help of people for the driver from all ethnic back grounds finding common ground. That was the magic with Big Willie's (RIP) concept back in the 60's and 70's.

The favored spot out of over 50 spots here in this congested city was "The Connecting highway"
Hands down if something went Murphy, the only two people and things that were affected were the two drivers themselves and their cars along with the adjacent 35 foot walls. All the spectators were safely looking from atop on street level. By far my favorite of haunts.
Guys should watch the weather patterns more often, even at a safe and sanctioned place.

Yes, BIG Willie from the brotherhood. He single handedly defused many a potential ethnic meltdown by bringing every concern and everyone to the neutrality of the starting line.
Everyone took that leap of faith and nothing else petty mattered.

Two pages and not one comment that it was Mustang? LOL
It was a street racing punk in a Mustang that took us out while driving home from the track a couple years ago, he hit us hard enough that it moved the Dakota on the trailer.
I don't much care for any street racing, anywhere. But that's just me.

I thought at one time he had 2 wing cars, plus a '68 Barracuda with a Daytona wing on it.

Re: But But BUTT street racing is sooooo cool - 10/14/18 12:46 AM
Yes he had two wing cars and a converted Cuda carrying a wing and huge "Street race" wheel well flares out back to accommodate the large slicks poking out the sides.
One of his Daytona cars of which his Brother had in storage just sold at auction a year or so ago I believe.
One of the wing cars got crushed in a accident as well.
Anyway, I've seen my share of backyard race cars here that I wouldn't race against even if they were lined up in a lane across the country. I mean, half cut chassis to clear big slicks, plastic pvc tubing painted to look like roll cages to fool the track officials, NOS bottles strapped down in the trunk with duct tape, you name it.
Whether it be a "Stang" or a Buick or a Mopar high on the ladder of finesse and craftsmanship or lower then Freddie Kruger's basement construction, some people just don't care about the weather, the road surface or even how a certain race haunt could affect innocent people.

Any pis or vids of these ratted out taped together cars? There are far more well built cars then junk, just like at the track. Dont we hear people complain on here about the junk at the track, the oildown delays ect... some like to cherry pic.
Must be lack of money, pride or ? because the guys that run around here actually have very well built cars, more heads up type builds vs budget bracket cars, but they are more or less track cars that do go through tech but just more raced on the street then track.
Everyone runs a aftermarket block, a good trans with a shield or blanket, proper cage, most have fire suppression at least in the engine bay if not inside as well and either a aftermarket 9 inch or some sort of 60.
I do see alot of goofy junk on youtube vids, just never first hand.
Really the most unsafe two in our group are hellcats, simply as they are not caged. And thats not a dig on hellcats, the owners just dont want cages.
Which really gets me thinking, hey look at all the hellcat vids on the web, what really do they have thats gonna save there ass at a crash at 140. They would peal open just like any other new rig. But no one here is talking about there stupidity.
What was the ford stang in the 90-s that was like the first modern factory like race car, the stang svt, I dont think it was that but it had no back seat, no ac... hmm have to look at google.

Even hitting a lightpole or two would have been a non-issue if he was just wearing BELTS OR A HELMET.
One of the semi-famous Detroit guys died in the early 2000's doing something similar. Testing a customer car on Grosbeck, no belts, no helmet. Lost it, hit a telephone pole and died.

Even hitting a lightpole
Lost it, hit a telephone pole and died.
Most poles along most streets are power or lite poles, some have some telephone cable or wires on them
I've put in many poles for the first telephone company that I worked for as a apprentice lineman, very few where for telephone only in the Mojave desert back in the early 1960s
Any utility pole that is taller than 22 Ft from the top down to the dirt or sidewalk is usually a joint use or power or lite pole only, not telephone only
