Curious as to how tight (from reccomended) is too tight? A friend asked me this same question a couple of days ago. I don't have any testing to back any of my thoughts, so I advised him to follow the manufacturer's card. How much power can be picked up by tightening the lash? A couple of HP??

As long as there is adequate v/p clearance you can run them as tight as you want.

When you get too far up the clearance ramp of the cam, the power will start falling off.

I often ran cams on “the big side”(for the application) in my own stuff, and they usually responded favorably to looser lash settings rather than tighter.

It been awhile but I think I was down to .008-.010 on my aluminum block aluminum heads cold.

As you know, mine is definately one size too big. So figured next lash( this week) try little tighter

Tighter makes the cam bigger, looser, more clearance..... smaller. Shucks, darn it

Can’t hurt to try both........ might work, might not.

It’s like playing with jetting and timing....... just gotta find what it likes.

You have to test each combination, one thing at a time, to find out what your motor and car wants

If you guess wrong (too tight) on an exhaust valve, expect to pay for it.

Been setting em .008-.010 tighter forever..........My Isky solid roller calls for .026 hot and I've been setting em at .012-.014 cold forever and en up in the .020 hot zone..........

I've only had a few solids, all in different motors. Two picked up with looser than recommended lash. The other was already at .030 and .028 per the manufacturer and tightening it slowed it down.

I theorized that my junk, with marginal to poor exhaust, tight converter, and shorter stroke generally performed better with less seat timing.

When you run the numbers, 0.004" might change seat timing 10°, but only change the 0.050" numbers by 3°. Kinda like making the ramps faster without changing the cam. Of course, its still a net smaller cam.

How would it change the .050" at all?
