Cast tunnel rams on 500+ cube motors - 08/26/18 04:02 AM

You guys that have done it, does your setup like carb spacers? I know the plenum sizes vary alot, even within the same brand. (I know Weiand has a scad of different plenum uppers.) Whats your setup like? I know Ill probably just have to try and see.

I think the Indy manifold has a larger plenum area than the Weiand. Weiand is an excellent choice. I have seen 1" and 2" spacers offered for sale to raise the plenum, but I have never used them, myself. I don't know if there is enough material to open up the Weiand for Max Wedge port size.

I've got a Weiand on my 605 Hemi and love it. I never tried any spacers under the carbs though as space between the carbs and the hood was real tight. It still makes tremendous torque and hp and I'd never consider going back to a single 4bbl.

We took the TR off our 655 and threw it on the 572 then threw the 572 in the car. The ports are mismatched (572 -13 v's 600 -13's), the hood isn't sealed, the carbs are too big (2 x 1150) but we've been within 1 MPH of the best the 572 has been with a single 4. We can't get it off the line yet (too many chassis changes) and the fueling isn't there either (lack of runs) When it all comes together I'm sure it will out run the single 4, which was a 440-3X with a well sorted out 1200 cfm pro systems dominator.

Every Mopar V8 motor, including SB, I've put larger carbs. on has gone faster and quicker shruggy
Every Hemiriod motors, especially 426 types, love more air and fuel up
As far as carb spacer you'll have to test yours to find the best combination up scope

Usually 1 in super sucker is the ticket ! (for me at least "")

I wonder how a shear plate would help on a tunnel ram?...

Back when I was considering a tunnelram for my 572 hemi, all I kept hearing was how small the plenums were. All the old Weiands were designed for near stock cube hemis, so they are on the small side for a 500+ inch motor.
As proven by quuickd100, they still make great power and a boatload of torque, but I bet his big hemi would make a bunch more power w/ a bigger manifold. I'd love to see him try something bigger b/c his motor is already a monster as it sits! Adding spacers should help, but it's gonna be awfully tall.

The Indy is the best cast hemi tunnelram, but even it will benefit from the plenum spacer that Indy offers on a 500+ cube motor.

I've played w/ all the big single 4500 manifolds on mine, but never tried a tunnelram. I had a 4500 flange Weiand for a while, but never bolted it on.

The tunnel ram probably doesn't weigh any more than one of those single planes too. I d love to try some spacers but I'd have to cut the hood and I won't do that.

I have an Indy dual Dominator tunnel ram on my Hemi with a 1/2" white Nylon heat insulator spacer that I made between the manifold & top plate. I also have shear plates under the carbs as well..

I wish I'd weighed the one I had, but never did. Sold it on ebay b/c I knew I'd never use it...wish I'd kept it for shelf jewelry if nothing else.
The Indy -3 and -4 single 4500 manifolds are about 23 to 25 lbs including the valley plate.
The Barton single 4500 manifold is 35 lbs!!!
