Gasket choice?

Gasket choice? - 08/19/18 04:57 AM

360 iron block/heads/race app (short duration-30 minutes). I have SCE solid copper .021" head gaskets that from what I understand should be ideally used with a copper O rings tho their tech said Indian head cement will work??? and I have some general purpose Mr gasket 1121G head gaskets .028". thank you for your time.

What compression ratio? I have not heard of any complaints on the mr gasket up to 12-1. Make sure everything is clean, oil bolts, bolt them down. I would worry with 4 head bolts per cylinder and indian head. I know if I tried it would fail

I can think of no reason the mr. gaskets would not be perfect. Clean surface, and lightly oil the bolts with motor oil.

The 028" mr gaskets will put me a C hair under 9-1 with 2CC notches in the calculator so if they hold up all sounds good, thank you! I will be super meticulous on the prep & go a bit high on the bolt torque.

Do not go more than 5-10 lbs high. Oil your threads, and oil where bolt touches head, or washer, no fancy arp or assembly lube. Since you claim to be an overthinker I will make it worse on with SBM. I have seen a 340, track champion 4 years running never able to hold a headgasket again after switching from bolts to arp studs and overtorqing. Stock blocks have thin decks. For your application no reason to go to far on the overtorque. Once you upset that deck motor is done.

Bro give me a # & I will adhere to it. OE used head bolts.

I would use the factory 95 ft lbs with plain oil.

X2 on no overtorque I use hard AN washers and the torque specs assume Motor Oil not some trick stud lube for fine threads
xtra fine surface for MLS
9:1 run whatever gives you tight quench

I am SOL on quench on this build (.112" down) but for sure I am gonna get it on next years' eng plus run a 63 dart which for sure will be lighter than what the chebby boys are running & on a side note the welded spider 4:10 7&1/4 has held up good so far (as we know it is lighter than an 8&3/4). Lot of them guys are running a furd 9" & not sure what it weighs (looks heavy tho). thanks guys. Much appreciated.

Clean head and block surfaces with brake cleaner or the like to get rid of any contaminents. Let the gasket surfaces do their work.
Use the 1121G gaskets dry.
95 ft-lb with engine oil. Factory sequence. I know you'll go up in steps. Make the last step big enough that your breakaway torque isn't the final value you're shooting for.
Funny that for 318s the rec torque is 85 with the same block and basic head design.
