When I got my block I was asked if I wanted this provision milled into the block , I chose to put it in there . Did not want to modify my new pan , not that it is the wrong thing to do but why change . Gary

a dipstick is a potential vacuum leak.. maybe a sight window in oil pan

No dipstick in mine - it holds anywhere from 8/10 qts and if it's not leaking any oil and you change oil mid season why do you need to check it? I have a vacuum pump and it pulls a small amount of oil each run so if you kind of keep track of what comes out then add a little every now and then.

I disagree. I wouldn't run without a dipstick. All engines use oil. Mine is a factory late model Mopar tube and stick with and o ring at the top. Seals fine with the vacuum pump. Previous to this freshen it used a quart every 25 passes including what dumped into the vacuum overflow. Never smoked, plugs were clean, had good power. That's scary without measuring the level. Currently a 10 qt fill with 1 1/2-2qts in the accumulator shows 7-7 1/qts on the stick. the stick was calibrated by adding one quart at a time on the bench. With 6 1/2qts on the stick, the gauge will fluctuate on hard braking. And that's with trap doors and a swinging pick-up. Makes you think? This motors rod bearings look like new at every check I've ever made, over 550 passes 4.5" stroke, 7200rpm.

Well a dipstick is without a doubt a potential vacuum leak, does that mean it will leak not necessarily. FWIW I've never run a dipstick on an aftermarket block, just for that reason. If you feel the need to use one then by all means do, just remember it is a potential area for vacuum to leak.

I've never used a dipstick on a race motor. If I were worried about it, I'd put a plug in the pan like a rear end uses.

I have a factory lo deck with the dip stick and tube and yes it leaked vaccume, so I removed the dip stick and put a tight fitting rubber cap on the tube and hung the stick in the trailer. that way I can check the oil when I feel the need.

My Indy block came with an 1/8 tapped hole for the dipstick. I took a dipstick cut 4-5 inches off it then took a 1/8 pipe plug cut a dremel wheel slit in it inserted the chunk of dipstick in it and brazed them together. Now I can screw it in to stick the oil. Although I think I only did it one or twice over the years.

I threaded my block 1/8" NPT and made a dipstick tube out of steel brake line. The top is sealed up with a pipe plug. Seems to hold vacuum.

Mine came with a normal dipstick I guess.
